Fashion and Advertising: Provocative Is an Understatement

Sex sells. We know it, fashion conglomerates know it. But some companies take that notion a step (or two, or three) too far.

There are provocative ads and then there are provocative ads, like Emanuel Ungaro's super steamy one (left). A handful of advertising campaigns from the '90s and early 2000s will make your jaw drop like they did mine. Still, they make you want to keep staring. I certainly don't live in a bubble, but there's still something mind-boggling about aggressively seductive ads. They make me feel like a kid who accidentally walked in on her parents' love-making session (gross!).

Take a lookie and let me know how these make you feel. Warning: These ads are NSFW.

I'm so sick of seeing overly provocative ads. Looking at that girl basically masturbating doesn't make me want to go buy that dress!! Sticking out tongue

Maybe they're a bit too sexy to be in good taste, but, honestly, I was just happy to see some men objectified and naked, too!

Ew gross! Maybe I wouldnt be so repulsed if that chick wasnt so ugly.

And Ive been sick of things/people that rely on shock factor for attention for LONG time now.

I'm used to provocative ads, but the Gucci one made me laugh! Actually, I think that one gave the girls who like to tan logos on their body an idea.

Nothing says classy like masturbation. I don't really wanna buy the dress anyway since its ugly but now I also think its dirty.

The sex factor doesn't bother me, but the ads don't particularly compel me to want the clothes.

i think the Ungaro picture of the girl masturbating is a reference to Scarface where Al Pacino's sister has that big fro and goes crazy. She starts touching herself in front of him right before this huge gun battle. I might be wrong but that's the vibe i got from it...

OVER THE TOP. And, I agree with Jude, the sex overrides the clothes.

holy crap! that ungaro one is crazy! i just don't think it reps. the clothing very well....i get the whole sex image thing to sell but honestly i dont think that fits the vibe for ungaro or that dress......

i dont mind overtly sexy ones...and some of these are ok for me....some just a lil tacky....

tom fords recent perfume ad's......those were some sex on a platter

well, isnt fashion innately about sex? we cover up our best assets, but our goal is to show them off so you want to see whats underneath. i think sex and fashion go hand in hand, so i actually like these.

and good call on the scarface scene, nicachica! thats TOTALLY what it screams to me! Laughing out loud

    Sex sells?

Men are distracted by the sex and don't remember the brand.

Women are angry at all the obejctifying of the woman body and men looking at such ads.

Imho sex doesn't sell and sex based ads are just plain stupid (as well as not tasteful).

Yeah, pretty much any Tom Ford ad with a female in it. Also the bulk of D&G ads, but they don't really reach this level (maybe 'cause their models pose kind of like droids/robots?), it's more of an overall thing.

I agree with sugajen - "Nothing says classy like masturbation."

Ew. It doesn't sell for me... It kinda grosses me out and makes me not want to buy/wear those clothes. (Like I could afford them anyway!)

I'm definitely not a prude, but I am kind of a germophobe I have to admit. Like - I'm grossed out by the thought of anyone else having sex on my sheets (even if I wash them afterwards). Ew.

Oh and the Sisley/winter hat one - could they have found a model with more obvious implants? They look like grapefruit halves!

See I love it! We are to effing worried about the wrong kind of censorship in America. It's "oh, hid the kids and mine own eyes from the sexually explicit, beautiful images of nudity and expression, and hand them a semi-automatic toy gun or video games where they can rip each others organs out..."

And we wonder why there's so much violence...Duh!

I'm not a fan. The focus should be on the clothes but instead they're on boobs, butts, and crotch shots. These aren't serving their purpose.

I like them! As long as my gut reaction isn't that the woman is being objectified, but rather, "hot!" I like sex!! What is the problem with sex selling? It's not like they're selling kids' books!
