On Our Radar: Women Choose Shoes Over Bags

Can it be? Have shoes replaced bags as the hottest fashion item? If so, I'm not complaining. I have a growing collection of bags, but as of late, I've become quite bored of the options out there. But the Spring shoe department, which houses such rarities as this MIu Miu Cutout Harlequin Bootie ($890), is a whole different story.

It seems the trend of naming bags after models and celebrities is now being used on footwear. Giambattista Valli has created a Victoria shoe in honor of Mrs. Beckham, while Calvin Klein made a Suri shoe, named after Tom Cruise's daughter. Also, unusual designs and materials used on bags is now being used on footwear. If that's not proof enough, department store Harvey Nichols has reported a 15 percent rise in shoe sales this season and a higher demand for runway heels. Adversely, a recent survey has forecast an 18 percent drop in handbag sales. It's also being predicted that women will soon spend more money on expensive shoes than bags. Do you buy it?

    Oh yes...I am a shoeoholic!
I leave the purse buying to my man. He always gets nice ones for me!

I love shoes and have way more of them than bags. I love bags too and have a few more expensive ones but no really expensive shoes. Yet.

im the opposite. i buy more expensive bags than shoes because i wear my shoes into the ground. within 3 months i've typically destroyed all remnants of a heel and at least a bag i know i can keep nice.

Yep shoes are my love! I have a killer designer collection and have um, 1 purse lol...and that's the "I'm not a plastic bag" one haha. Shoes are just way more fun to collect and wear! Well as long as they are nice ones, I'm not up for buying the knock offs or cheapies b/c there is SO a difference in quality that I never even realized until I stepped up!

I don't know about either. I don't have expensive bags or expensive heels, because I just can't bring myself to spend the money on them. I live in Portland, OR a city where its just so easy to walk everywhere, and heels are just not that practical. They look great, but do I really want to get bunions and blisters and totally have ugly feet before I'm 30? I would like a nice bag eventually, but now in my life, I have more important things to worry about, like paying off my student loans....

I have more expensive shoes than bags for sure....and I would rather buy expensive shoes than bags. Shoes are more noticable accessorize items for your outfit than bags are. Shoes are also must be worn items and bags are optional.

The bag diva/snob asks for equal time for the handbags. Please!! I think it's safe to say that JessiShaye will agree. We'll look for it, Fab!

I never really understood the shoe thing some girls have. For me, it's all about the bag! Different strokes...

These shoes are cute but I wouldn't wear them. They would just sit in my closet.

Shoes you have to wear pretty much all the time, bags are to carry around crap and if you take the train or something it is just not practical to carry around the equivalent of a potato sack just because it is pretty.

i'm tough on my shoes, i have them ruined within a couple of months. i couldn't see spending hundreds of dollars on a pair of shoes, but i feel like i could take care of an expensive bag much better.

Oh my, that shoe is amazing! I love looking at shoes, but I kind of have limited options for myself, because I am incapable of wearing high heels.

I've rationalized this to myself. I have a thing for shoes and for bags. But I don't know about you, but despite my various handbags, don't tend to rotate them so much because I'd have to transfer everything from one bag to another. This is especially true for my school bag. I have a blue one that's better as far as organizational capacity than the one I've been using, but I switched to this black one at some point last semester and haven't gotten around to switching back.

Therefore it's easier for me to justify my shoe purposes than my handbag purchases.
