The Look For Less: Yves Saint Laurent Jersey Bustier Dress

Yves Saint Laurent's jersey bustier dress, worn here on the runway by Olga Sherer, is surely the hit of the season. Everyone from Julianne Moore to Gwyneth Paltrow has worn it to red carpet events. I would love to be a part of the YSL-wearing clan, but my paycheck isn't suited for that type of mega-spending. I'm pretty sure you're on the same page.

How much more similar can a dress get? If this Spiegel Strapless Tulip Dress ($89) came in gray, it would be YSL's identical twin. It would make a great YSL-inspired LBD, no? For that price, I hope I'm eliciting a gaggle of nods.

Great choice fab. I actually like the purple color on the Spiegel dress better. I think purple is coming up a lot for this Fall. Plus I think the shape of the Spiegel dress is more tolerant as well to the tummy of non-model.

the ysl isn't half as striking as the spiegel, IMO, and the price is ridiculous for such a simple silhouette. I know quality will be different because it's YSL, but still.

I actually like the Speigel dress more...I like the way its pleated at the waist.

By the way, anyone else find it humorously ironic that its made of jersey, and is an evening dress, when just the other night on Project Runway someone was whining about getting jersey fabric from their model for HER evening dress?

    Sticking out tongue

And I agree on the comment above about the model..the more I stare at her chest and shoulders, the more uncomfortable it is...I hate when I see all those horizontal bones above the breast line....too thin, too thin for my taste, anyway!

These dresses are perfect. I wonder if the Spiegel version would be flattering from a side view. I may just order it.

Good point, sldc, I wonder if the Spiegel dress would look too "poufy" in front, viewed from the side.

Those pleats could work against someone's shape... the dress would have to be the right fit, for sure, and not at all too tight.

Its a beautiful dress but its a shame that picture got posted. For all the bad rap the fashion industry has gotten about setting bad examples, it sure doesn't seem to care if its reinforcing the idea. Olga Sherer just looks bad. Forget aesthetics, she just looks unhealthy.

The picture is depressing. What's the point of a bustier dress if you have no bust and it's falling off. Sad very unattractive.
