I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant Until I Had the Baby!

Occasionally we hear about women who say they didn't know they were pregnant until they went into labor. The tiny jolts I am currently feeling in my tummy make stories like that hard to believe, but the mommies in the video below are convincing that their unknowing pregnancy was the real deal.

Get Flash to see this player.

Dr. Kristen Bendikson of USC told Good Morning America's Robin Roberts that these situations can occur when ladies suffer from polycystic ovarian syndrome or enter their perimenopausal transition stage. In both cases, menstrual cycles aren't regular so missing a period may not denote pregnancy. Also a key factor for many women is their weight. The heavier a person is before pregnancy, the less noticeable a weight gain would be in a nine month period. Tell me, do you think you could have missed the pregnancy signals?

I am overweight and I was overweight when I got pregnant with my son years ago...There is NO WAY I could not haave known! The kicks, the back pain, the constant tired feeling...its UNMISTAKABLE!!! Unless the woman has never been pregnant and is very obese I just don't buy it!!

I didn't believe in this until last night when I was watching something on the same topic on Discovery Health. A woman had actually lost weight during her pregnancy because she was preparing for her wedding. She ended up having the baby a couple of weeks before her wedding and the baby was and now is perfectly healthy.

There is no way I wouldn't have known because I was really nauseous the first three months and the last three months.

This is beyond me. To have this happen, you would have to have no connection to your body at all. I knew the second I craved potato chips and MISSED A PERIOD! And the kicks!?! Seriously? Many times, especially towards the end, I thought she was going to kick straight out of my stomach. Not to mention when she would ball up under my ribs on the right side. I don't think there is anyway I would not know there was a baby in there...

With that said, I do know someone that this happened to. She went to the emergency room with bad stomach cramps and went home with a baby boy.

pinkprincess - the girl I was referring to in my post drank HEAVILY also. Her brother said, "I think he's [the baby] had more vodka than I have." She also did drugs. I hope for the sake of that sweet baby boy that he is OK.

I would think you don't have a very high level of self awareness if you can't tell your body is pregnant for 9 months.

i agree that you must be really out of touch with your body to not know you are pregnant. I got pregnant right in the middle of training for an ironman. I was in amazing shape but very thin (about 100 pounds) and had stopped getting my period..so I was surprised when I found out i was pregnant! But it only took me a couple of weeks to notice something wasn't right. I thought I was overtraining and cut my workouts in half, when that didn't work I sent my husband to the drugstore for the test.

    I just don't understand it...

Pinkprincess - I am sorry to hear about your son. Although it sounds like you have a very good outlook on it. He's lucky you are his mama Smiling

It does make you wonder though, doesn't it? I did everything right too; no Sushi, extra fruits, veggies and proteins, and if you were to look at my daughter and her son next to one another, you wouldn't be able to tell a difference. It's hard to say what the future will bring...her son could be exceptionally smart/gifted, or the vodka, etc. may have impacted or halted some neurological development. It's hard to say.

you have to keep going and strong you cant dwell on something that will never change, but like i said he is the best gift and would never change him or switch him for a "normal child", anyway back on topic people tend to get angry when posters express their experiences

Um, I have polycystic ovarian syndrome and I knew when I was pregnant. I don't get how that makes any difference...sure, I had irregular and missed cycles, but when you are in late stages of pregnancy, how can you not notice a growing belly? Especially when you are so uncomfortable towards the end. I don't get it.

I just find it so hard to believe that you wouldn't know. I'm 24 weeks and I have been feeling all kinds of movement that I couldn't imagine not knowing what it was since 16 weeks. Your body changes in so many ways that you really would have to be not in tune to your body to not notice!

My baby wasn't much of a kicker and I didn't get very big but I still knew I was pregnant. I don't understand it either. I was fatigued beyond belief and went through so many changes that you just know something's up.

I've heard of this before. It happens on occasion, and I trust that it's real and these women are telling the truth. But like the story says, weight is a huge factor. This can only happen to fat people.

That girl pinkprincess mentioned that said she had an ulcer -- she was either lying, or actually that stupid, in which case she really shouldn't reproduce..

It seems totally unbelievable to me, but I have a really hard time being pregnant (the symptoms, I mean, not the fact that I'm pregnant, which is lucky and lovely). I'm sick the full 40 weeks, I have symphysis pubis disorder, I feel tired and weak, the bump hurts, the baby kicks. When you're in the 30s weeks, the baby doesn't just kick, it shifts around, turns over, and you can see the giant shoulder movement of it turning, it looks like Alien.

How funny- I actually asked my doctor about this at my last prenatal appointment a few weeks ago. He mentioned how some women still have their period and how obese women don't gain very much weight, but admitted he didn't understand how women could not know. He pointed out when you see an elbow roll across your stomach and think it's just gas- that's some pretty massive bowel issues.

I know someone who didn't know until she was 7 months pregnant. She is a bit round, but not really heavy. She actually had surgery for fertility reasons WHILE SHE WAS PREGNANT and they didn't know (it was at the very beginning of her pregnancy)! I think the doctor wrote in her chart "noticed enlarged uterus."

I do not buy their "I did not know" stories one bit; I think they made it up for publicity.

I have never been pregnant however no matter how chubby your mid-section is, all you would have to do is touch your belly and realize that is doesn't just press in as usual, that it is like a ballon. Plus, you would feel the baby. If these women did miss their periods normally because of a condition, wouldn't they notice something was wrong when it didn't show for 5-9 months (depending on your system.) These women must be very out of touch with reality.

Sorry if I sound mean in anyway, I just do not believe that you can have no awareness that you are pregnant. Maybe if their weight was like 400lbs+ however I bet even those women would notice.

I never been pregnant either, but I find those women hard to believe. They must be completely out of touch with their bodies.

I'm very connected to my body. I can tell when I've ovulated. Also, I can tell the week my monthly girlfriend will be arriving.

i agree with you who don't believe these women- either they were completely moronic (no clue about their bodies) or in severe denial... don't you think family & friends (not to mention strangers) would've pointed out the fact that they were pregnant? your abdomen HAS to get bigger (the woman planning her wedding... don 't you think she would've noticed? brides usually stay on top of their sizing & weight)and your chest grows to!
whatever... thank goodness their babies didn't have major issues

One of my close friends said she didn't know she was pregnant until she gave birth at 7 months. And she is quite petite(around 5'2" and 110 pounds). The baby was only 2 lbs and barely over a foot long when it came out. Now he's nearly average size at 18 months and grew up to be very adorable. But I worry about him having neurological problems down the road.

I remember learning about this in psych class and being amazed that this happens. Years later, it actually did happen to my friend's sister. She didn't know she was pregnant, stayed tiny throughout the whole pregnancy, and wasn't perturbed by the fact that she had a baby out-of-the-blue. It was established that she was likely raped and her mind couldn't deal with the trauma and both her mind and her body suppressed the incident and the related pregnancy.

I heard about this with young girls who have a been abused and they pretend it never happened and nine months later a baby comes out. I do believe they might not have noticed, it happens. Just cause some of you have never known anyone in that situation doesn't mean it can't happen.

Ok this reminds me of a "dear abby" from last week and here it is if anyone wants to look at it: http://www.uexpress.com/dearabby/?uc_full_date=20080719

It basically is about a 20 year old male whose girlfriend starts gaining weight, and his family asks her continuously if she's pregnant, as do her co-workers, and even tho all of those people continue to ask her she still never took a test.

I still find this hard to believe though. I too heard about this in a psych class but they say it is largely related to denial.

I was pregnant until 2 months when I "lost" the baby, and during thsoe eight weeks i was so sick and i didn't feel like myself, even my boyfriend noticed a change, everything from my boobs to my personality. Everyone of my friends who have been pregnant were basically the same.

I've had two friends get preggo while on the pill and both knew something was up within the first 5 or 6 weeks. So to me being on the pill is never an excuse anymore, since i've seen people go through that....

Call me crazy but I think I'd like to be oblivious through 9 months of pregnancy!!!

joking aside, I would be blown away to find myself that out of touch with my body, and want to do what I can food and exercise wise for a healthy baby so I'd be bummed to find out I'd been having a glass of wine every night while pregnant!!

but otherwise, I'd love to suddenly have a kid and not have to go through pregnancy!

This sort of happened to me, i didnt know i was pregnant until i was about 5 months along. At that point i hadnt had my period in about a year because i had been very ill due to complications from crohns disease. I had gained about 20 pounds but because i had my gallbladder taken out about a month before i conceived i thought i had gained weight because of that, in the previous year i had gone from 140 to 98 pounds so i thought it was a good thing i gained lol. Ive always had crazy cravings for things and always get twinges in my tummy that feel like kicks. Due to the complications my mom had been told that i wouldnt beable to conceive, but she didnt tell me that. Its kind of funny tho, i was thinking about babies and what i would want to name mine if i had one. I was talking to one of my friends about it and she asked if i was, and i said i didnt think so but lets go get a test to be sure, and that damned pink line showed up as soon as the pee hit the stick! So just to let you all know it really does happen, and not everyone get super sick. After the year i had i was feeling great! I had the easiest pregnancy and labor ever!

i agree that alot of people are probably oblivious to their bodies, but if they've never been pregnant, and are really obese and used to being uncomfortable, then i could see it happening.
