Anya Hindmarch I'm not a Plastic Bag: Love It or Hate It?

I've been seeing this Anya Hindmarch "I'm not a Plastic Bag", approx $6.75, everywhere. Apparently it is all the rage. It it quite cheeky and with all the talk about banning plastic shopping bags it is fashionably PC. And for once here is a designer bag that is pretty wimpy in composition and is actually cheap - as it should be! That is why this bag has been selling like hotcakes and has bids up to $270 on eBay. Ok, that I'm not sure about...but this would be an awesome bag to tote my organic groceries in. Fashion meets function meets the environment. Viva la future!

For $6.75, I love it. It's adorable and funny, and I may pick one up if they ever restock.

As cute and sarcastic as this bag is, how many celebrities are actually using it instead of plastic bags? I love the idea, but it seems to be a celebrity statement of "environmentalism," more than a demonstration of environmental activism.

I'm undecided. I like that someone managed to make reusable shopping bags fashionable, but I don't like how this bag has turned into a must have status bag. I guarantee that there will be a large sect of women who carry one of these into the grocery store as a purse and still have their cashier sack everything in plastic. :T

These are cute and funny, but re-selling them at $270 or whatever totally defeats the purpose!

Personally, I find the statement a bit pretentious, because it's screaming, "LOOK AT ME!!! I'M ECO-FRIENDLY!!!" whereas there are plenty of people out there who have been using no-name/blank canvas shopping bags for ages to help the environment, yet they don't feel the need to proclaim this on the bags themselves. HOWEVER, I DO think it's a good cause b/c it will encourage more people to stop using plastic! So I wouldn't personally use it, but I'm not against it Smiling The end.

It's cute and cheeky but it has serious undertones of trend wh*re. Most eco-cool people dont need to broadcast it so vociferously. Sorry, guys.

If the bag encourages people to use reusable totes then great. Plastic bags do pose an environmental problem. We, the planet, consume approximately 1 million plastic bags per minute. Annually that comes out to something like 500 billion or more. Yikes! For me, I prefer bright, colorful bags. Mine have cute graphics that bring a smile to my face and sometimes to the cashier or a fellow shopper.

Grocery stores have had these for decades. It's not a fashion statement or a statement about the environment. It's a cop out. If you really wanted to help, you'd buy one from your local grocery store and use it there.

So if you're really shopping for groceries do you buy 10 of these and tote them around? I do think it is cute.

I pre-ordered 2! But it wasn't $6.75. They were $15 each, plus $15 shipping. It's still a great price tho, and they're sure to sell out really fast. But as I don't live in a city where they have an AH store, it's worth it to me to get on the list and have it shipped to me.

there seems to be no real idea behind this bag- none of the money goes to any sort of charity, I dont get the hype.
You can get reusable bags at most stores for like 2 bucks

I would like to have one, though my problem is the "status symbol" part of it--that really bugs me. If people are buying it for status, they've got the wrong idea. The only thing they're thinking about is themselves--not the environment. Which is completely tasteless in itself. As I've seen on other discussions on this, you can buy status but you can't buy class.

I completely love the idea and the bag itself is cute, but it is hard to find at a reasonable price. I work for a company that hunts out and stocks eco friendly products, and there are really cute totes for less made out organic cotton. There are even ones you can design for yourself....for that reason, I left it as undecided.
