Fab Flash: "I'm Not a Plastic Bag" Banned in China

The latest in the Anya Hindmarch "I'm not a Plastic Bag" saga: the tote has been banned in China after several women were trampled yesterday in Hong Kong trying get ahold of the canvas tote.

Fakes are already beginning to proliferate; one Beijing-based dealer told The Times of London he expects to have almost 1,000 bags of the same size, weight and fabric as the real Anya Hindmarch tote by the weekend. Oh the craziness this bag has caused!

Not sure I get the big deal with this bag... and it may be ecologically friendly but is anyone else dubious about the fact that an allegedly good quality shopper that's manufactured in China can retail for as little as five pounds sterling? Unless it's being sold on a strictly not-for-profit basis (which it might well be, I've no idea) it reeks of cheap and exploitative labour to me.

Uum yeah it's not a hot bag either, the public sometimes amazes me how they just fall for a quick flash in the pan fad.

so they ban the bag because the people are being stupid about it? dmblauren makes a point. there are plenty of options out there if you don't want to use a plastic bag.

I know it was unintentional, but this bag bothers me. How about we promote people using the bags we already have lying around our house instead of going out and buying/using more materials in an effort to save and not make waste? It's like concerts to promote saving the environment that cause more of pollution bringing people to the actual concert, or events to raise money with $2500 goodie bags to all the celebrities "donating" their time.

This is so dumb. I hope I don't get flagged for posting this, but has anybody seen the bag that says "I'm not a smug cu*t?" It's a pretty funny satire of the bag above.

I cannot believe how expensive it is. Buy a gorgeous tote bag in your own choice of colors with a cute design on it from l.l.bean or a sail-cloth bag with rope handles. Don't buy this stupid trendy bag.

from the website itself http://www.anyahindmarch.com/division/environmental_bags_faq.aspx :

    Where was this bag made?
I’m Not A Plastic Bag is made in China. We have worked with a reputable supplier there whose workers are paid double the minimum wage and who complies with all aspects of Chinese Labour Law. The factory also retains external consultants to monitor it from an international standards standpoint.

I was lucky enough to get one of these bags because I preordered mine from the Anya Hindmarch LA store, and I see that mostly everyone commenting here doesn't like them : ( I think it's an adorable bag and it's made of a high-quality material, even if it IS controversially made in China under shady circumstances. I actually use it instead of plastic bags at the market and out and about, too! Cute, useful, and highly in demand for $15??....doesn't get much better than that.
