Compare & Contrast: Ashley & Mary-Kate Olsen

Forgive me for sounding like a broken record, but Ashley and Mary-Kate are serious style icons in the making. We should look to them for inspiration whenever we can because they really are designer muses; it is wise to follow their dramatic trends-in-the-making choices. Though there are favorite similarities (shoes!) between the avant-garde sisters, they do use different approaches to dressing. Ashley's look is more streamlined and modern, while MK's is more tousled and vintage-inspired. I thought it would be fun to compare and contrast the recent outfits they wore while shopping at Maxfields in Los Angeles. Both are edgy, both are Fab, but which do you identify with more?

Top: Leave it to Ash to make a black scarf and a men’s t-shirt look androgynous chic!

Bottom: Black cigarette jeans are always
flattering.

Accessories: The Fendi bag reinforces her sleek look by adding clean lines. Those Alaia platforms are killer! The dramatic straps make the shoes the focus of the outfit. I’m guessing that was her intention. The bulky watch compliments her boyish look and her modern aviators are bad ass.

Top: It’s no surprise MK is wearing a voluminous cardigan as a dress; she can get away with it because it’s loose and she’s petite.

Bottom: Non existent. But props to her for letting her skinny stems breathe!

Accessories: Her Prada fringe bag adds some much-needed texture to her otherwise simple outfit. Her patent mule Loubs are very old Hollywood and the traditional aviators are classic.

Mary-Kate constantly looks like a high budget bag lady. I'll follow her trends only when I need a good laugh.

I've always loved the Olsens. I've grown up watching them on tv and absolutely love them. Though many do negatively criticize their style as "bag-lady-ish" (Mary-Kate's in particular), I have to agree with Fab that they are style icons in the making. It's kind of weird to think, though, that one day people might be looking at "little Michelle" as style icons the way that we admire Audrey Hepburn's style. Nonetheless, love them, love their style.

I think they both look wonderful. They follow their own style and manage to walk in shoes (esp. from Balenciaga) that I wouldn't have thought possible.

I definitely lean more towards A's style. I'd rather look long and lean (although I'm short with short legs), than look like my clothes are just taking over my body.

I like Ashley's style better. Mary Kate with her boho -chic style makes her look like a street bum in NY

    I'm Ashley all the way.

Fab, I'm so glad you posted this because the sugar gals were ripping MK and Ash's style on popsugar and it made me mad.

These girls are going to be style icons - and if I hear one more person say they look "homeless" I'm going to scream. I've never seen homeless people look so good... but perhaps I just haven't seen the true homeless... :/

i don't understand how they can be considered style icons- just cause they wear a slightly different variation on the same theme everyday? i also don't understand when dirty became "vintage" if anyone other then an olsen walked out in what MK normally wears, they'd be laughed right off the street. she only gets away with it cause she's 75 pounds and an Olsen twin. I personally like Ashley's style better but just cause she can afford thousand dollar shoes and bags to go with a white t-shirt and jeans, i hardly think she is a style icon. she's just well dressed. besides- there 21- lets save the icons for people who have lived a lifetime. (ps i do like MK and Ashley though, i'm just tired of the style icon stuff!)

They always look the same to me. Anyone can be a "style icon" when they're worth a hundred million bucks. Ashley has a decent sense of style, Mary-Kate does not.

Not only can't I tell them apart, I think they both look dirty. As in take a bath, get a haircut. The bags are bigger then them. The shoes... would look great on someone who was wearing something that went with them!
Maybe it's me, I'm not gettting 'it'....

i really do not view these two as style icons. the only reason they can get away with their looks is because they are rich and household names. i bet they look better in pictures than they do in person (same with nicole richie). i've rarely seen someone as small and thin as them look that great in clothes.

I'm not getting why they are style icons. I never see them in anything fashionable and truly no imagination in color. They always seem to be trying to avoid everyone.

When it comes to the Olsen twins, I'm a little on the fence. On one hand, they look as though they dress a certain way for the sake of being whatever is they are going for. For example, MK is constantly an image of high-class hobo, simply for the reaction people will get. I don't see it as style (or even being worthy of the term "style icon"), but more as "What can I put on to make people talk?" Also, putting on a white t-shirt and jeans is something anyone can do. They just have the cash and waif bodies to work in couture items.

But on the other hand, considering MKs history with eating disorders, her image can also reflect whats going on in her head. Just like the grunge trend in the '90s, wearing baggy clothing with lack of color was expression of a troubled mind. Ashlee, on the other hand, is recognized as the "together" twin, and so in turn her image is going to be alot cleaner.

All in all, I wouldn't so much call them "style icons", but rather ones to watch. Anyone can put on a long sweater, some gold "brass knuckle" rings and have the same look.

They both look like drowned cats with that god awful hair! Their wardrobe is ALWAYS the same too. The only positive thing I can say is that they both have fantastic shoes!

I lean more torwards Ashely. I don't particularly like MK's style and I wish the both of them would use mor color. What is whit MK's hair does she not comb it? I have to agree that their style is their own. Some of you guys keep saying that anyone can put together these outfits but I haven't seen anyone do it quite like these two, sure their outfits are simple but their accessories make it FAB. Icons are ones who make a statment and these two sisters have definately done that. Love the shoes on Ashely. If MK would have just done her hair up maybe she wouldn't look so high class bum.

Usually I prefer A's style, but in this case I prefer MK's look. Although it's always difficult to make this determination, it looks like (judging by her legs) she's put on a few pounds - which is definitely a good thing.

Ash seems safer on the whole, and while that means she's less likely to wear things that make me go "errr.." it also means she's a lot more boring. I love MK's style because she obviously gets really into certain looks--like the balenciaga shoes or the fringed prada bag--and wears them to death. She gives the impression that she really dresses for herself.

I love their style, but it's so hit or miss. I'd like to see them take more color risks, but I totally support sticking with what works!
