The Top 10 Essentials, According to Nina Garcia

I just wrapped up Nina Garcia's Little Black Book of Style and it was a truly lovely read. It would make a great gift for any woman looking to up her style ante. It's easy to read, and easy on the eyes, and is full of juicy fashion learnings.

Last week I talked about the 10 fashion essentials, according to Tim Gunn and you all added your two cents. Well, Nina, being a Project Runway judge and fashion director at ELLE, has an opinion on the 10 essentials as well. You will notice quite a difference between hers and Tim's — although some items make both lists, ie. LBD, white shirt, cashmere and trench. Nina's essentials are a bit more womanly and include luxe accessories; the gal certainly has taste. And, as she puts it: "Go a little crazy. Be a little dramatic. Have a lot of fun." Amen.

To see what Nina's 10 essentials are, read more

I have been searching for the perfect men's watch and still have not found one I like. I want it classic and not overly masculine. Any suggestions?

i actually bought her book thinking it would be full of wonderful fashion tidbits.. and when i finished reading it, i was left a bit disappointed. she stated the obvious~ but the historical background was pretty informative.

I agree that the men's watch is a surprising choice. I wonder if she explains why men's watches are better than women's watches?

jessy777, what kind of men's watches are you looking for? I hear Movado has some great-looking ones that are elegant but not too masculine. Kind of pricey, though. Original Penguin has some cute, fun ones, too.

I agree with most of her selections, especially about diamonds. Smiling They are a girl's bestfriend!

Personally, I'm not a fan of wearing men's items. That's not me.

These lists are just about playing it safe. I'm so tired of them. They are fine to follow if you have a conservative work environment but real style is about idiosyncratic choices blended to give the wow factor.

This is just the 1 to 10 of how to conform and fit in at the golf club. Eye-wink

I don't think a white shirt looks great on everyone. I look horrible in white. So I tend to disregard that one.

I agree with catherela. I picked up her book and was also disappointed - there was nothing new in her offering. It got read in an hour and taken back the next day. I did learn that her mother convinced her seamstress to move in with her, but again - having a good tailor is not a new concept.

I look awful in white too, brendelwoman...
I love most of the selection, especially the flats and the trench...but I'm a sucker for flats and trenches in general.

I just don't understand the men's watch trend. I personally prefer more delicate items on my wrist. Everything else on the list i have, but I use each item creatively. This list is definitely the basics of the basics.

I don't like this list much- its so obvious. Who is this list and/or Tim Gunn's list for? The woman who works only one day a week? Are they simply meant to be building blocks? I guess that's it. It just seems lacking. The whole reason we all shop like we do is because as women, we have a million different life senarios that we need to dress for.

i too have been wearing a men's watch for some time and i love it. im a bit of a drama queen so sometimes i even wear two men's watches (choice: Cartier) at the same time - same wrist! - like bangles.

and personally i reckon if you were supposed to write top 10 essentials, its not like you can write Wellingtons, caftan, brooch...etc. the 'essentials' seem boring and predictable to any fashion-sensible gal of course. theyre called 'essentials'/(basics) for a reason and i almost totally agree with garcia. although it wouldve been great to see Spanx up there Eye-wink
