Yesterday Karl Lagerfeld presented his “Métiers d’Art” collection in London. This collection is shown outside of the official fashion calendar and is unique to Chanel. It was established in 2002 following the acquisition of the master Parisian ateliers who have been collaborating with the house for decades. It's a celebration of the exceptional decorative craft of these ateliers.
I spent the sunsetting part of my day examining close-ups of the accessories. Since the collection is a tribute to the decorative craft, I wanted to use my discriminating eye. The collection tickled my fascination with vampires — moody, tailored, heavily embellished looks. Seeing as how the inspiration was the "English chic" that Coco Chanel herself was introduced to by her British lovers, Boy Capel and the Duke of Westminster, this makes perfect sense.
From jeweled crosses to sparkling chain bags, these could outfit a fashionable remake of Bram Stoker's Dracula. I especially love the silver-tipped shoe and gold metal lace gloves. The placement of jewels in the hair and on garments is an inspiring technique. In all their goth splendor, these accessories are indeed a modern tribute to the decorative.
