Fab Ad: Valentino Spring/Summer '08

Times they are a-changin'. Judging from Valentino's Spring/Summer '08 ads, it seems there's no longer a need for pretty-faced models to show off luxurious designer items. Even though it's Amber Valetta, Anja Rubik, Raquel Zimmermann, and Shalom Harlow hiding behind those drop-dead bags, it might as well have been any other model with a slim bod; Valentino could have even saved himself a buck or two! These ads are different and attention grabbing, and for that I admire them. For once, a designer has placed the accessories — not the model — front and center. What do you think?

It's ok. I don't see it as anything ground breaking. Remember those early ads by Etro using birds heads in place of models faces? At the time, that was something really different. Mr. Garavani is retiring from the business but does he still have control of the ads? I guess what I'm asking here is if this ad campaign was his call.

I'm torn...I like some but not all the pics. But...if the bags sell without seeing the celebs faces what the heck is the point of having celebs model??

COVERING UP THE MODELS' FACES WOULD GET THEM OVER THEMSELVES - FAST! WHAT'S WITH GISELE (FOR EXAMPLE) MAKING ALL THAT MONEY JUST TO WEAR SOME CLOTHES??? I DONT CARE WHAT SHE LOOKS LIKE, THEY ARE ALL ONLY THERE TO PROMOTE THE DESIGNER'S IDEAS AND DESIGNS. BUT, I GO ON...

I think it's Major! We obsess far too much over a model's body and face. This was Sexy and Chic in a non threatning or overpowering way..

the concept is genius, so that people would actually see the goods and not the models

To me, this reads: It's not the person, it's what they're wearing... it takes the human element out of an industry that has little in it to begin with. Bad move.

I don't think it's that daring or original. It's STILL just a skinny model. Except for a few of the big-named models, I can't identify them in advertisements, so it's not like their faces are distracting me from the product. They usually aren't that pretty anyway--just tall and skinny. If anything, I think this is more distracting because now I'm focusing on her body and wondering what her face looks like. Her value is still in just being a skinny girl. Whatever. I doubt I'll ever own a Valentino bag...and I'll certainly never be that skinny. Maybe it's just jealousy.

I think it's a play on how a lot of the celebs are hiding from the paps these days. I've seen numberous pictures of a headless Olsen hiding behind her mammoth bag!
