Are Eyebrow Extensions the Answer to the Low-Maintenance Beauty Boom?

You've likely heard of hair and eyelash extensions, but did you know you can also get them for your eyebrows? Yes, eyebrow extensions are a real thing and they're becoming increasingly popular as people search for alternatives to treatments like microblading, laminations, and more.

"This service is usually recommended if you have an event coming up as they can also be applied directly to the skin," Clementina Richardson, founder of Envious Lashes, tells POPSUGAR. Due to the skin's natural oils, eyebrow extensions tend to shed faster than other brow procedures and, therefore, are suggested for a shorter period of wear.

While it's not a new treatment, in an era where people are doing high-maintenance beauty procedures to be low-maintenance longer term, it makes sense that there's a rise in interest around them. Ahead, Richardson explains everything you need to know about eyebrow extensions including how they're applied, how long they last, and how much they cost.

What Are Eyebrow Extensions?

Eyebrow extensions are just as the name suggests: mink or synthetic hair (similar to the kind used for lashes) is added to the brow to provide a specific shape, length, and width to the area. "They are done by attaching hair fibers with a medical-grade adhesive [to the existing brow hair]," Richardson says. "The extensions used are on the finer side because if they're too thick then it will look unnatural."

Before getting eyebrow extensions, Richardson recommends getting a consultation to map out the proportions of your eyebrows. "This also helps specialists understand the client's goals so that they can strategize where to place the extensions," she says.

How Much Do Eyebrow Extensions Cost?

As with any beauty service, the cost of eyebrow extensions will vary depending on where you live, as well as the experience level or your artist. At Envious Lashes's New York City location, for example, the service starts at $200 and can go up to $350. Additional factors to consider in cost might include the condition of your natural brows and if your desired look is thicker (and therefore requires more hairs and a longer service).

How Long Do Eyebrow Extensions Last?

As opposed to the results of microblading or powder brows, eyebrow extensions aren't permanent. Lifestyle is a key factor when it comes to how long you eyebrow extensions last. Some people may need to touch their brows more than others or other may sleep on their faces. Wherever you land on the spectrum, the key with eyebrow extensions is being gentle with the area. "When cared for properly, they can last anywhere between two to three weeks," Richardson says.

Generally, to extend the life of your brow extensions, it's best to avoid harsh washing of the face, wearing eyebrow makeup, and brushing or rubbing them too aggressively.

Eyebrow Extensions Before and After

Whether you're on the hunt for a new look for a special occasion or just want to give your eyebrows a makeover, eyebrow extensions are a great treatment to consider. Though they aren't as invasive as permanent makeup or full eyebrow transplants, the results can look extremely natural, and in the world of the "I woke up like this" aesthetic, what more can you really ask for?
