Hold up: Is this an Olsen I'm looking at or Hilary Duff? I did a double take when I saw the singer at TRL's goodbye party. I can totally see Ashley rocking this unique look.Like many of the other guests, Hilary opted for an LBD. But hers isn't any old black dress; it has a sexy sheer layer. She then cinched her ensemble with a wide leather belt and kept her feet simple with black patent pumps. She dressed up her earlobes with large earrings — her signature. I normally hate sequels, but how can you hate when it features a much-loved fashion star, the LBD? The first time around was not enough. More ladies of glamour appeared at events in the classic LBD. But really, what is a classic LBD? These dresses, from designers like Yves Saint Laurent, Jolibe, Dolce & Gabbana, and Alberta Ferretti, are anything but classic. Call it an oxymoron, but the LBD stays strong.

How many LBDs do you own? And I bet they're all pretty different, right? Some are casual, some are fancy, some modern, some classic. It's safe to say a gal can never have enough LBDs. There's a reason it's mentioned on every fashion essential list. A testament to the versatility and diversity of the LBD is a recent influx of them on actresses, singers, and models. And yet, I'm not sick of it. I mean, you put Beyonce in a Gareth Pugh LBD and wicked metal glove, and it's a whole new vision. Take a look at all the incarnations of the LBD and I guarantee you won't get bored, either.

This Week's Fab Favorite: Mandy Moore

Mandy is fairly incognito but whenever she's out and about we snatch her up and feature her. She seems so friendly, down to earth, and healthy. But wowsers — she turned heads in a Preen LBD this week at the opening of the "Vanity Fair Portraits: Photographs 1913-2008" exhibit at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. What a perfect choice for an art soiree.

Her newly chopped 'do looked naturally amazing and let the dress shine. The dress, from Preen's Spring collection, is a reinvented LBD, partially bondage, partially utilitarian. It manages to be sexy and sporty — how unexpected. And the slight black sheen photographed beautifully. She wore simple black suede Louboutins, fine, but she added the perfect amount of metallic with a shimmering snakeskin clutch. Her big beautiful smile took the dress from Fab to fabulous.

Any woman will tell you the LBD is a critical wardrobe piece for work and play. You don't have to let go of your favorite always fashionable crutch just because your belly is growing and you're not-so-lil any more — plenty of designers have pretty and chic maternity LBDs.

One of my favorites right now is the abs one shoulder dress (on sale for $150) because it has the same feel of the flowing Maxi dresses Gwen Stefani and Angelina Jolie wore while pregnant with their now infants.

Of course, there are always options with sleeves, shorter hemlines and intricate designs that add a lil flare to the staple.

Fab Redux: LBDisco

I recently had a long day of wine tasting in Napa Valley, got home around 7 p.m., and had to get ready to go back out again. As fun as a social life is, it can be exhausting and challenging.

Challenging, in the closet arena. I definitely have some go-to items for lazy Sundays — jeans, moccasins, cardigans — but a Friday night on the town? So I grabbed my black Corey Lynn Calter maxi dress, threw on tons of jewelry, a vintage clutch, a light-washed jean jacket (to dress the look down), and called it a night. And yes, I felt quite Fab.

This black disco dress, size small ($34), can also do the LBDisco. You don't have to be an expert to learn these moves. Plus, if you're not so sure about loud print maxi dresses, this caters to the trend in a more subtle way.

Look of the Day: Modern Day Audrey
