During New York Fashion Week, a handful of attendees were asked a very important question: For whom do women dress? Here's what they had to say . . .

Carine Roitfeld (left): "I don't know for everyone else. For me, it's for myself. When you feel good about yourself, you feel good about everyone else."

Anne Hathaway: "Most women dress for their most fashionable friend."

Isabel Toledo: Women dress for men. I do dress for myself because it makes me feel empowered, but I'm definitely looking for [husband] Rubin's expression, not his approval. I do use clothes to speak — how I dress is a form of communication for me."

Sophia Bush: I dress for myself. There are days when I don't want to be dressed up so I'm not. And there are other days when I really want to be done from head to toe. You've got to dress for you."

Fab Times at New York Fashion Week

You heard about my fashion week fumbles, but that's just a result of the stars not aligning quite right this time around. Though it's a fast and furious week, it's a fabulous week. I wouldn't have it be any different, really. Although having a town car take me from show to show would be a-mazing. One can dream right? Now that I've sifted through the runway looks, chosen my favorites, started a mental wish list, and gotten over my jet lag, I can share with you the Fab times at New York Fashion Week.

Most Fab show? This one is always a toughie; either Rodarte or Oscar de la Renta. Rodarte felt like I'd stepped into an alternate fashion universe, and Oscar was just so beautiful and rich. Oh! The Project Runway finalist show was pretty exciting too.

The Bags to Have at Fashion Week

Who knew a fun way to kill time at Fashion Week was to snap pictures of fashionistas' handbags? I am more of a shoe girl, but fabulous bags were just dangling left and right and I had to give you a peek at the bags of New York Fashion Week. The most popular were Goyard, Marni, Mulberry, Prada, Chanel and, my personal favorite, Yves Saint Laurent. This is a good mix of It bags and classics; it goes to show whatever bag tickles your fancy works as a bag to have at Fashion Week. What caught my eye? This metallic handled black Givenchy Nightingale. Ashley Olsen is a fan of this bag — I love the contrasting handle and convertible strap.

New York Fashion Week Trend Alert: Livin' on the Edge

Some New York designers channeled their dark side for Fall. I wonder if this has anything to do with the dark get ups of fashion influencers Kate Moss and the Olsens. Perhaps. The cool touch of model/stylist/muse Erin Wasson at Alexander Wang (left) was certainly evident. This may not be the most uplifting raiment for dark and stormy days, but the fact of the matter is: On such days, don't we all sometimes feel like dressing like a bad ass?

A Few Fab Words With Victorya Hong of Project Runway

Being aufed from this season of Project Runway didn't get Victorya Hong down. In fact, she came back full force and staged a whole runway show last week at New York Fashion Week — more than those still left on Project Runway can say for themselves, since they shared a catwalk. Just minutes before her label, Na-Be by Victorya Hong, made its runway debut, Bella (thanks doll!) caught up with Victorya for a few Fab words . . .

Is this the first time you've done a big show like this?
Yes; I'm scared.

Oh no!
And everyone keeps saying, "Scared? Well, okay, that means you're excited." And I say, "That means I'm really excited."

So a year ago, if someone had told you that you'd be showing at the Altman Building, what would your response have been?
I think a year ago that would have probably been something I never would have imagined. Even though it's happening now, it's still kind of hard to believe that it's happening!

On Our Radar: Catherine Malandrino Creates Jewelry Line

New York Fashion Week marked the launch of Catherine Malandrino's first-ever jewelry collection. This is exciting news for the designer's followers because each piece was created to match her Fall '08 collection. Necklaces (as in left), rings, cuffs, and earrings in shades of green, cognac, charcoal, and black are composed of raw minerals and semiprecious stones like African jade, aventurine, tigereye, agate, and enamel. Sounds and looks exotic!

The collection will make its debut at the Malandrino boutique on Melrose Place in LA in the Fall.

Fab Faces of New York Fashion Week

I have always been drawn to exotic models (European mix white girl right here). However, my favorite model of all time is Canadian, with a bit of Italian, Linda Evangelista, but really, she's the best. With today's girls, not only is there not enough diversity but obscure looking blondes rule the runway. Whatever the reason may be, my eye goes to the exotic, interesting and girls who have personality. If I was a model right now, I'd want the looks of Brazilian born Bruna Tenorio (left at Oscar de la Renta). She looks like an Egyptian princess with her strong nose, beautiful eyes and long, shiny mane. With Chinese, Japanese and Brazilian blood, it's no wonder she turned out so unique. To prevent me from doing a slideshow of only Bruna — I was this close — here are some other Fab Faces that made me swoon at New York Fashion Week.

Not So Fab Fashion Week Fumbles

Fashion Weeks are fun and fabulous. But no one really talks about what happens on the way to the fashion show: the running around, lack of sleep, perpetual "where is my seat (if I even have one)?" question, outfit self-consciousness and, in my case, the fumbles you take along the way. After another week of all of the above, though, I feel a unique sense of elated exhaustion. Annabelle too, after two weeks at her grandparents' house, felt this. You've read my reviews and interviews, seen the New York collections and heard about my fabulous dinner with Diane von Furstenberg. But here's some insight into what happens along the way . . . it's not all fashion fun and games.

Day 1: Un-fabulous rainfall. Favorite Lulu Guinness umbrella breaks. (It was really cute: black with playing cards all along the rim.) Pop into trusty Duane Reade to buy a new one. One hour later, that one breaks. I end up going to the Marc by Marc store and buying two new ones that are really cute. True, money I didn't plan on spending; False: Fab caught in the rain again.

New York Fashion Week, Fall 2008: Shipley & Halmos

The former designers of Trovata debuted their first collection for Shipley & Palmos at New York Fashion Week, and I for one was impressed.

Highly wearable and modern, these well-tailored pieces feel fresh. At a time when so many designers don't know when to simplify their creations — I'm looking at you Project Runway contenders! — these designs, for men and women, seem just right.

Smart jackets, tulip skirts, and everyday blouses walked through a surreal door stage. A couple colors, plum and canary yellow, provided some pop, while an ivory and black paisley print was whimsy. The simple dresses were the perfect backdrop for some standout jewels. I'm keeping my eyes on these California boys . . .

Sophistication has been turned up a notch for Fall. Which point in American time was known for fur stoles, cinched waists, buttoned up blouses and skirt dressing? The conservative '50s to the early '60s. Of course, the '60s soon took a turn to rebellion, but leading up to that ladies were tucked in and tame. Or so they tried to be. This style and thinking is the basis for the hit show Mad Men and who knew it would spark so many designers' creativity? As someone who appreciates women dressing like women, and not little girls, I embrace this trend. But don't be afraid to still show a little leg and pad a little bra . . .

New York Fashion Week, Fall 2008: Jenni Kayne

Olsen pal Jenni Kayne brings a piece of LA to the New York scene — and I, for one, am glad she does. Her Fall collection is a nice balance of grunge-inspired plaids, fine tuned menswear pieces, and maxi-length feminine skirts and dresses.

Prints and bright hues are sparse, but when they do show up, the leopard, fuchsia, patchwork, and yellow all work to great effect. Below the knee pencil skirts, sheaths, fur trim, and neutral colors reflect the '40s era Jenni was influenced by.

Now imagine walking through the presentation to a classical orchestra playing Nirvana. That, my friends, is a great example of how Jenni effortlessly mixes the classic with the modern.

New York Fashion Week, Fall 2008: Lyn Devon and Exclusive Designer Interview!

Lyn Devon is a new-found Fab friend who let us in on her inspiration and fabric-tweaking techniques at New York Fashion Week. She started her design house in 2005 where her artful designs have won accolades — including the 2007 Fashion Group International "Rising Star Award" in Women's Ready to Wear. Oh, and she previously worked at Zac Posen and Ralph Lauren. Fans include Sarah Jessica Parker, Mena Suvari, and yours truly. Take a look at her Fall collection: A futuristic approach to Medieval armor, and read all about it below!

Why don’t you tell me a bit about inspiration.

This season I started with armor. A warrior. An artful, independent spirit — which is always my muse. I really wanted to play with the idea of hard and soft and having these structural elements but keeping it feminine and really contoured to the body. I definitely brought it closer to the body this season. I was feeling sexy.

Which is your favorite look from the collection?

I’m really excited about the navy shirtdress. It’s simple but tailored to the body and has this interesting detail. We used this technique: We sliced away the fabric and then inserted borders underneath so if you look up close you see these slices, these different sections on the body. I love to play with lines on the body. This particular dress we encrusted with an armor of Swarovski crystals.

Fab Flash: New York Runways Still Devoid of Color

While the clothes that appeared on the runways of New York Fashion Week represented the whole color spectrum, the same could not be said about the models wearing the clothes.

A survey conducted by New York Daily News concluded that out of 1,584 modeling slots, only 6 percent went to black models, 6 percent went to Asian models, and 1 percent went to Latina models. Although Diane von Furstenberg, president of the Council of Fashion Designers, urged designers to concoct multicultural shows just last month, six out of the 66 shows that took place in the Bryant Park tents had all-white lineups.

It's surprising and frustrating that after this issue was called to national attention last season, it's still such a problem — sad, really.

New York Fashion Week, Fall 2008: Donna Karan

Keeping with Fall's traditionally dim color palette, Donna delved deep into dark territories. The designer's love of long, flowy dresses, however, remained. Chanel Iman, Lily Donaldson, and Catherine McNeil sashayed down the runway with much gusto in their ruched gowns in deep red, copper, black, and olive. Powerful coats in brocade, feathers, and satin styled followed. Though kept to a bare minimum, some glitter and sequins appeared on berets and clothes. Fall's Donna Karan woman is serious and knows how to power dress.

Ladies and gents, I do believe Peter Som has come into his own at the house of Bill Blass. No longer just for ladies who lunch — though they will appreciate the grey metallic separates and luxe pant suits — this collection is simply fabulous.

I have been won over by the black and white florals, sculptural craftsmanship, and sexy tailored vests And the colors: A fun mix of black, white, grey and pops of glam rockin' cobalt, teal, and plum. Are you loving this as much as me?!

New York Fashion Week, Fall 2008: Brian Reyes

It's safe to say that Brian Reyes' recurring fashion week nightmares didn't come to fruition — in fact, his show proceeded quite smoothly. Reyes, who started out under Oscar de la Renta's wing, is honing his name as designer to the sleek and chic.

Taffeta trenches, skirts, and dresses were patterned after Reyes' inspiration: the curving lines of topographical maps. Funky jewelry adorned necks, heads, and ears, and earth tones ruled the color scheme, aside from a cameo of fuchsia or cerulean.

The label's strength always lies in the dresses, and in this collection, there were plenty to choose from. That flaked silver metallic number? Definitely less like a nightmare, more like a dream.

New York Fashion Week, Fall 2008: Marc Jacobs

Leave it to Marc Jacobs to go pastel for Fall. You will not see your expected chocolate brown, plum or teal on this runway. You will see icey neutrals, a couple metallics and pastels. Does this sound a bit Calvin Klein to you? Read on.

For Spring Marc spoke of sensuality, Fall is quite the opposite. Women, looking slightly like men, were boxy, sporty and simple. Though, they were refined and comfortable. Never one to follow trends, but rather set them, I don't know if looking like a box is one trend I want to follow . . .

Not a belt in sight, cocoon-like shapes gave way to cropped pants, collared shirts and v-neck sweaters. Dropped hemlines took things low, while shoulders remained a focal point. There was a bright bag here and there, but I was slightly distracted by the Jazzercise headbands. Can we go back to dressing like women, please?

I think every runway should be glittered in gold. Maybe that's why some fashion-loving females, including Amy Smart and Carmen Electra, were in attendance. Though, the collection was really fit for Kate Hudson and her moody bohemian ways . . .

Florals were present, but somewhat tame and morbid. Ruffles, billowy dresses, lace, and glittery belts kept things very feminine, very Rebecca Taylor. Boyfriend sweaters and shearling vests were the only masculine pieces here; they were quite cute. You know I love me some leopard, the mix of moody florals and animal print really buttered my bread. Something already on my Fall wish list: the black-on-black leopard print coat. To die.

What was up with the model who had a shoe problem so she decided to just take off her heels and tippy toe the rest of the runway? Oh those silly pretty girls.

New York Fashion Week, Fall 2008: The Project Runway Finale Show (!)

Fashion week is coming to close and I just experienced my grand finale. How exciting is it to attend the Project Runway finale show?! Very.

I knew it would be a mob scene getting in, and luckily I was on the list (you never know sometimes). I wasn't too far in the nosebleeds — and I was directly facing the panel of judges and celebs. Tons of Project Runway alums were mingling in the crowd, including recent cast off Ricky. But honestly, my eyes were on guest judge Victoria Beckham. When she came out, in her orange draped dress and matching orange shoes, the crowd took notice. After photo ops she sat with Nina Garcia and Michael Kors. She was very poised and calm. Funnily, she took diligent notes during every collection — she was taking her guest judge job very seriously.

Lights down, lights up. Our girl Heidi appears announcing, "Hello everyone!" She introduces the judges, and guest judge, and the crowd swoons. Let the show begin...

How Would YOU Wear It? Fashion Week Edition

The outfit Heather Graham wore to the G-Star Raw after party is not acceptable for any event, much less a New York Fashion Week one. Where does one begin? Most people would first bash the see-through top, but I'll start with the denim skirt. Denim skirts are tricky because they can look so outdated. Her pairing the skirt with the sheer top is where she went all wrong.

Heather should have ditched the denim skirt, as it's tacky. The top has potential to be stylish, but I would have thrown a black tank under it so as not to reveal too much. On the bottom, she should have opted for a more modest pencil skirt or wide-leg trousers.

Call me cuckoo but I like Ali Larter's all-white Calvin Klein outfit that she wore to the designer's Fall '08 show. I applaud her for taking a risk, especially since so many fashion week-goers have been so safe. If not pull out all the stops at New York Fashion Week, then when? I dig the high-waisted white skinny pants and the peek-a-boo effect with the crop top. It's a little Carrie Bradshaw-ish. Am I crazy for liking this? Source

New York Fashion Week, Fall 2008: VPL & Exclusive Designer Interview!

I've talked about VPLs numerous times on Fab but haven't mentioned VPL as much. Allow me to clarify. VPL by Victoria Bartlett does play on visible panty lines, but it's seen as a good thing in her world. I've been coveting one of Victoria Bartlett's color contrast bra-like tops for a while now and was excited to see her unique bodycon creations in the flesh, or rather, in the fabric. VPL celebrates contrast and contradiction and the designer is inspired by some really interesting stuff. See VPL's Fall collection and hear the designer behind the label.

You’ve always done innerwear as outerwear. And now a lot of designers are doing that.

Yes, it’s always been that way. A lot people mistake it for lingerie. I never intended lingerie; it was always innerwear. Years ago when I was at Miu Miu I started doing innerwear as outerwear and I was always fascinated by innerwear to be seen. Innerwear, outerwear, anywhere. It’s really a mixing block so you can layer.

Is there anything you did differently this time around?

You know what’s weird, I went back to what is inherent to VPL which is the “Musculature” of the whole body. The only thing that was really new was bringing more tailoring to it. But it was quite an adventure for me because I’ve always been much more about cut and sew and knits.

Fall 2008 Trend Alert: All About Sleeves

The trends for Fall are starting to reveal themselves and one thing is for sure: It's all about sleeves. Drama has taken form on the arms, where designers are offering cropped, voluminous, lantern, folded and everything in between. Some of these are fun for day and some, like the intricate ones at Marchesa (left), are ideal for night. Day and night, night and day, it's all about sleeves!

In celebration of Chinese New Year, designer Vivienne Tam outfitted Mickey and Minnie Mouse at Disneyland Hong Kong. Dressing the iconic duo was an attempt to bring in Chinese tourists to the theme park, but what excites us is the capsule collection she created for her signature line. There will be nine pieces in the collection, similar to what Milagros Schmoll is wearing on the left. Cartoon characters have never been so chic.

Celebrity Style: Jennifer Lopez

It's been ages since I featured Jennifer Lopez on Celebrity Style. That's probably because she's been in pregnancy hibernation. The stunning singer stepped out for Marchesa's Fall '08 show in a Notte by Marchesa trapeze dress. It's not a pregnancy dress but Jennifer rocks it out despite her full-blown belly. What I love most about her look is how instead of pairing girlie heels with her feminine dress, she opted for something a little rough and tough to create a fashion contradiction. Brilliant!

New York Fashion Week, Fall 2008: 3.1 Phillip Lim

When Phillip Lim is inspired by David Bowie's character The Man Who Fell to Earth and Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac, the resulting collection is full of sheer fabrics, satin, Swarovski crystals dotted here and there, and even a little glam gold.

The hems are much more modest on this Lim collection than they have been in the past: the skirts and dresses all hit right at knee-length, if not below. The matronly feel was carried through with long, loose granny cardigans. But Phillip kept his label's cohesiveness, focusing on solid, classic pieces with a contemporary flair. Pants were cropped, jackets boxy, jewelry Marni-esque. And the palette was typically neutral, interrupted by punches of Fall-worthy turquoise or burnt orange.

I can't say this is my favorite Lim outing, but here's to hoping he will refine the pieces before they hit the racks!

Nanette Lepore's designs have always been popular with party-ready ladies and now I know why: Nanette herself is a fun-loving girlie girl. Check out my exclusive interview with her after a few words about her Fall collection . . .

What I loved most were the black and ivory pieces, actually. Lepore really knows how to use Chantilly lace and tailor a pant. There were some coats with serious character — a common theme throughout the New York shows — and some highly desirable knits. A fuchsia knit dress caught my eye backstage and on the runway. Her suiting always has a way of being sexy and '30s inspired dresses were classic, but modern. The Warhol-esque flower print was bright enough to stand out in a crowd but mellow enough to wear every day.

The Mulleavy sisters are on the rise, and after attending a Rodarte show for the first time, I now see why. Though Laura and Kate's designs aren't everyday wearable or affordable, they are art. And the sisters are evolving. One thing is for sure: Rodarte has found a niche. A fantastical world where women are feminine creatures who inhabit an otherworldly place. Intrigued? I caught up with Laura in the Lexus lounge after her show, and she spoke the creative speak of a designer in her element.

What are you feeling now that your show is over?

I am exhausted, excited, and happy. I was so nervous that last two days and I have no idea why.

More nervous than before?

Oh definitely. I think we were just so invested in it and it was definitely “us.” It just meant a lot for us to do this collection and get to a point where you grow and you can do more; it just felt different.

There were so many textures and colors in your collection. Let’s talk inspiration.

It started with the idea of Japanese horror films and Kabuki theater. Then we had the color red — how do you make red beautiful? Is it through orchids and peaches; do you use blacks, white, grays? And if you want to use all those colors, how do you balance it all? I felt like last season was a lot of watercolor pieces, but this season it felt like a movement of color too but in a stronger way.

We all know and love my designer pal Catherine Malandrino for her colorful cocktail dresses, but she's taken a sudden turn for her Fall '08 collection. You decide which Malandrino you love more. Thick sweaters and textured skirt suits like this one dominated. I can do without the swim cap-like beanie, but I think I'd sport the blue suit, especially with the satin chartreuse blouse and green leather gloves. It's classic with a funky twist. New York Fashion Week, Fall 2008: Rodarte

If someone were to costume design a sci-fi ballerina flick, the result might be something like Rodarte's Fall 2008 collection. Tattered loosely-knit fishnets, super studded gloves and Louboutin heels, and Degas-inspired tutus: they were all there.

The sisters Mulleavy have come a long way in a few seasons, and this time around presented a spectacle of ghostly alien girls decked out in everything from a highlighter-green chiffon dress to a red and black yarn skirt. As far as being wearable or affordable, I'm not sure either applies to the collection, but it is definitely beautiful and whimsical — the two things Rodarte does best.

Behind the Seams: Dining With Diane, Revelations With Rachel

Here's something worth losing my gloves in the taxi for . . .

I had the honor of attending Diane von Furstenberg's postshow dinner. In her fabulous studio next to her store in the Meatpacking District about 200 fashion folks (Ann Duong, Hamish Bowles, Suzy Menkes) and celebs (Molly Sims, Ellen Barkin, Susan Sarandon, Rachel Zoe, Rose McGowan) wined and dined. While I usually leave the celebrity doings to Pop and party talk to Party, it was an exciting, all-encompassing evening. When I wasn't with my new-found friends at Fashion Week Daily, I was taking pictures for you guys and talking to Ellen Barkin. Oh, and sipping bubbly.

Catered by long-time fashion favorite restaurant Indochine, the lady of the hour looked at ease and happy after another successful runway show. There was a giant screen with the Super Bowl playing — it was the NY Giants playing, after all. Amongst all the stimuli, it was also shoe heaven. Party goers had clearly gone home after the shows to change into less comfortable (more fabulous) shoes.

Lazaro and Jack have done it yet again; they've served up a collection that despite it being brooding, is definitive and wearable.

The mixing of various textures is what really beckons. Light fabrics like metallics and sequins were melded with heavy wools and velvets, creating a maturely chic environment. Cocoon coats, sequined and satin wide-leg pants, fur-collar jackets and button-down shift dresses contributed to the serious collection. To add some femininity, the boys presented jewel-tone mini dresses in purple, forest green, and mustard yellow.

It's because of Proenza Schouler that I am now looking forward to Fall!

2008 Fall New York Fashion Week Fabionistas, Part 1

If there is any time of year that brings the models, fashion editors, socialites, and other sundry fashion people out, it's Fashion Week. Officially, New York Fashion Week kicked off last Friday, and since then, it's been a never-ending blur of parties, awards ceremonies, fashion shows, and more parties. Ellen Pompeo, Rihanna, and more models than you can count are at large — like Liya Kebede (left) who showed up at 10th Annual amfAR New York Gala. Without further ado, the first installment of Fabionistas out and about. And take note: They seem to like their black . . .

I am welcoming DKNY's Fall '08 collection with open arms. One reason is the frills, especially the rainbow colored ones from this particular look. The thinly sliced fringe really came to life when the model pranced the orange runway. I also appreciate the pairing of the zip-up sweater, fingerless gloves, grey tights, and peep-toe patent shoes. New York Fashion Week, Fall 2008: Betsey Johnson

It's a beat thing, daddio. Betsey's Fall show was inspired by "beat chicks" and their berets, cat eye sunnies and all black ensembles. However, there were many touches of Betsey: rocker blazers, belted halter dresses, feathers, animal-print wrap dresses, oversized fur coats, and skinny pants with sheen. Compared to the other shows, whose color palettes have been rather subdued, Betsey's vibrant hues are a double shot of espresso, man.

Betsey also showed some items from her archives and some of these prints were way out there. For example a yellow sweater with oversized handguns emblazoned on them. Betsey?! On the less dangerous side were poufy cherry-print dresses, high-waisted shorts, a hot pink mini turtleneck dress and a retro striped swimsuit. The old Betsey is back . . . but with a newfound fierceness.

New York Fashion Week, Fall 2008: Carolina Herrera

Today was a good day for a ride in the countryside . . . for Carolina Herrera. While Ralph Lauren has equestrian chic down pat, Herrera is giving him a run for his money.

Colors were borrowed from a fall landscape: oatmeal brown, China blue, lemon drop yellow and russet red. Masculine tweeds are layered over chiffon print shirts, vests and riding pants. There wasn't much in the evening category; Herrera opted to create dramatic daywear instead. And succeed she did. Opulent materials like fur and feather were omnipresent — the long feathers that stemmed from the dramatic fedoras had a life all their own. Puffy eyed models (late night girls?) also donned plaids, brocade and corduroy.

Cape? Check. Riding gloves? Check. Whip? Check!

New York Fashion Week, Fall 2008: Oscar de la Renta

As always, Oscar was all sophistication and elegance. The models trotted out to a live performance by Regina Spektor, who crooned and played a grand piano in the background. Full taffeta and tulle skirts swished by, ornately embellished — all with grandeur.

At times, the checkerboard tweed overcoats, shimmering skirt suits, and vivid silks were so beautiful I found myself subconsciously holding my breath. Fuzzy fur toques, beaded shearling vests, and rich jewel colors hinted at a Russian influence. Oodles of dresses for all occasions, Oscar's specialty, were present: day, cocktail, and gown. They all had one thing in common — the appearance of decadence. Ultimately, that's what Oscar is all about . . . a classic decadence.
