Fab Flash: Alexander Wang Takes Home The CFDA Prize

After much anticipation Alexander Wang was named the winner of the 2008 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund.

For his grand prize, Wang received $200,000 and a year’s worth of mentoring from some of best designers in the industry. Albertus Q. Swanepoel of Albertus Quartus and Lisa Mayock and Sophie Buhai of Vena Cava were named this year’s runners-up. Congratulations to all!

As we ease into holiday mode, embrace jackets that shine. You know I'm jacket obsessed and therefore cannot take my eyes off of Daisy Lowe's red satin blazer. Amazing. Red is deliciously bold, but a neutral, like Leven Rambin's, can be thrown atop anything and everything. If you really have a flair for the dramatic, Nina Ricci, who has a penchant for shiny jackets, gets top plaudits. For Spring, the house showed a glowing neutral Edwardian jacket with tailcoats — like no jacket I've ever seen.

One of my favorite Russian models Natalia Vodianova spent an elegant evening out with her hubby Justin Portman at the Gagosian gallery in Moscow last night. Per usual, she looked svelte in an Alexander Wang's nude and black one-shoulder dress. Instead of doing the usual dress with fancy sandals, Natalia went down the funky route by wearing the frock over leather leggings, finished with patent peep-toe booties. To add a sophisticated twist, she opted for delicate gold chandelier earrings and a fur chubby.

Alexander Wang's Spring collection delivered his signature dark color palette, only this time he injected a dash of bright pink. What a genius partnership if you ask me. Here, model Lily Donaldson is seen in Wang's black sequined tank, black shorts, a bright pink blazer, and cool platforms. If it's too cold out to bare your legs, don a pair of sheer black tights and be proud to be Wangified.

New York Fashion Week, Spring 2009: Alexander Wang

Julia, check. Erin, check. Anna, check. Do you need last names? Wang is quickly climbing up the fashion food chain so his Spring show was sure to be a frenzied event — that it was. And how fitting that the runway and models were liquified, since Hurricane Hanna did its own wet work on the audience. Thanks to some buddies over at Page Six Magazine and their town car, I was moderately soaked. But Wang was wet n' wild.

With Miami Vice as inspiration, there were cool deco hues amidst the designer's favorite black. The collection kicked off with oversized tanks, leather (and suede) and du-rags, but soon colors emerged creating a lovingly tough aesthetic. Wang continues to deconstruct tee shirts, dresses and tee shirt dresses, thus draped and looped cotton basics were a plenty. But Wang also played with sweat pants — creating legging like layers — and jackets — from poppy blazers to loose cardigans. Some denim pieces were also Wangified; I was particularly drawn to a chain handle jean bag. And of course, Wang sent his new shoes down the slick runway, elevating the models, and the clothes, to first name status.

Sporting her cropped do, the model looked fresh and fantastic in NYC during a visit to The Tyra Banks Show to celebrate the first all-black model issue of Vogue Italia. It looks like walking down the runway has perfected her art of styling. I like how she wrapped a brown belt around her cuffed Smythe boyfriend blazer and spiced things up with those colorful cut-out heels. One word describes this look: Fab!

On Our Radar: Erin Wasson Designs For Rvca

Erin Wasson will be sketching, rather than catwalking, for her latest endeavor: clothing designer. The model, who played muse and stylist for Alexander Wang's last two collections, will be designing a 2009 Spring collection for Rvca.

“I’m going to get my rocks off seeing girls in California skating around wearing my clothes more than I think I will seeing it in the fashion world,” said Wasson.

The Erin Wasson for Rvca line, which has already had interest from Opening Ceremony, will range from $55 for low cut tanks to $230 for frayed denim shorts. Look forward to a collection filled with cotton tops, denim, miniskirts, and blazers detailed with zippers and thunderbolts. Don't worry, the model doesn't plan on quitting her day job anytime soon: “Oh, no, honey. You don’t bite the hand that feeds you,” said Wasson.

Fab Flash: Wangified Shoes and Diffuse

Alexander Wang is clearly on the up and up. If you dig his cool, disheleved vibe, listen up. Wang is adding shoes and a diffusion line to his Spring line up. The San Francisco native, who has always cited Kate Moss as muse, also recently upgraded his design studio in NYC. Furthermore, Wang hired a new stylist, to fill in for model and bff Erin Wasson.

“[Fall] was the season where people really recognized us,” said Wang. “We’re under a microscope now. We have to watch our moves and make sure everything we do is right.”

Come Spring 2009, a diffusion line will present cotton basics, like tanks, tees and tee shirt dresses, at $28-$40 wholesale, in everyday colors black, white and gray. But they won't be too basic. “Necklines are stretched and armholes are strategically lowered so that it looks worn in,” he explains. On the other hand, his footwear promises to be fierce. There will be five styles, all different takes on the platform sandal. The shoes will compliment his up-and-coming Spring collection which he hinted will be very colorful, focus on separates and have a slight Miami Vice vibe. Cool.

When there's salt, there's pepper. Hot and cold. Light and dark. You catch my drift. In fashion, we are always presented with another side of the coin. If Ice Ice Baby isn't your tune, try watching Tales From the Dark Side.

Some of these designers always cater to the dark lords of fashion — London's Gareth Pugh, Givenchy's Ricardo Tisci. A few just felt like dipping in murky waters for Fall: Julien Macdonald's dark glam rockin' looks and Gucci's fabulous folky getups. Meanwhile, Alexander Wang is proving to be the connoisseur of downtown (dis)taste. But no one told a tall tale like Ann Demeulemeester and her posh tatterdemalions (left).

Disclaimer: I'm just the messenger. You know this '90s trend is back in action when supermodel Heidi Klum is spotted donning a pair of baggy jeans. Don't get me wrong, I love Heidi, but her saggy denim reminds me of days past in high school watching Boyz n the Hood.

For those interested, most offerings are sold at high end retailers for a pretty penny. Be savvy and raid your man's closet — I wonder if Victoria Beckham borrowed David's — or buy a pair of cheap baggy vintage jeans.

Wherever designer Alexander Wang goes, the cool kids follow. Such was the case last night when St-Germain and Satine boutique hosted a trunk show for the young designer. Not surprisingly, Wang's sidekick, model Erin Wasson, was there to party the night away despite her broken leg. After all, she has been helping him style his runway shows; they work hard so they play just as hard!

But it was semisurprising to see new mommy Nicole Richie because, though she wears a lot of black, I have never seen her in Wang's grunge-inspired clothes. No matter. Nic stayed true to herself and wore a sexy LBD, snakeskin pumps, and a Chanel clutch.

The last time I asked you about these style pants, you all hated it. Baggy and saggy pants are definitely not for everyone but I dare you try it. So, how low would you go?

If you're swaying on the avant garde tip, I'd suggest you hone in your eccentric glamour with a pair of crotch dropping jodhpurs. If you're still on the fence — like me— try a more subdued version with a pair of crisp cropped baggy trousers like Phillip Lim's to the left. My only piece of advice: choose something that flatters your derrière. Have fun and be brave!

Six women's designers have been named Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation winners, joining an illustrious group of past honorees which includes Zac Posen, Proenza Schouler, and Derek Lam. The new recipients, who are each given a $25,000 grant to help showcase their Fall 2008 collections at New York Fashion Week in February, are Alexander Wang, Elise Overland, Lyell by Emma Fletcher, Reyes by José Ramón Reyes, and Wayne by Wayne D. Lee in the women's design category, as well as Subversive Jewelry by Justin Giunta in the accessories design category. Congratulations to all, and I look forward to seeing what the grant helps produce!

This morning one of the Pop girls declared: "I can't believe it's December." It always seems to creep up on you — the end of the year, that is. Alas, time flies when you're having fun! And fashion is just that. But it is time to decide which designer gets the Fab crown for Most Fab Designer of 2007. Last year, Phillip Lim won, and he has made great strides this year — maybe we sent him some good vibes. (L-R: Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel, Nicolas Ghesquière for Balenciaga, Roberto Cavalli, Alber Elbaz for Lanvin, Alexander Wang)I present to you the candidates for Most Fab Designer of 2007. Chanel is a crowd pleaser and red carpet stunner. Karl continues to reinvent the house, for both ready-to-wear and haute couture, and the accessories inspire and intrigue. Balenciaga, led by wünderkind Nicolas Ghesquière, is edgy, innovative, and a leader of the pack. The piped blazers from the Fall collection launched a thousand look-a-likes, and now Ikat prints are all the rage. Roberto Cavalli is a designer with gusto, one who doesn't follow the trends and always stays true to form — sexy, colorful, and glittering party looks. His collection for H&M was possibly one of the most coveted H&M designer collections yet. Alber Elbaz for Lanvin can do no wrong, from fluid tailoring to jewel-toned dresses. Maxim Magazine may have deemed Sarah Jessica Parker one of the Unsexiest Women Alive (WTF?!), but Fab will proclaim her as the one of the most Fashionable Women Alive. So there! While filming the Sex and the City movie, her character Carrie sported a stylish Alexander Wang buffalo plaid cardigan. Lindsay Lohan also wore the cardigan upon her coming back to LA from rehab. Bold, daring, powerful. Red has reared its beautiful head for Spring. What is usually a color associated with wintry weather and the holidays, come Spring juicy reds of cherry, strawberry and candy apple will steal the spotlight. I welcome this with open arms; it's been a while since I bought a fabulous LRD or red blouse. Doesn't charley here look cute as a button and a bit like designer Alexander Wang? If I didn't know better, he's a part of the Wang Gang. From the nautical striped long sleeve tee to the cropped slim jeans - this look is very laid-back cool boy.

Who Wore It Better? Alexander Wang Goddess Dress

This one's a toughie; who knew this Alexander Wang dress could go from bad girl to good girl? We saw Megan Fox looking foxy in it not too long ago, and here is little miss Lauren Conrad in the same color block frock at The Hill's Season 3 premiere looking perfectly put together. While I'm over black nail polish, and LC obviously isn't, I prefer her little Minnie Mouse black patent round toe pumps to Megan's matchy-matchy ones. But I think they both add some personality to this dress, what do you think?Source

Tweety Bird's gone designer! A limited-edition collection of everything yellow - from clothes to home accessories - based on the animated icon was celebrated in style yesterday at the pop-up Tweety Boutique in Beverly Hills.

An array of designers celebrated the yellow cartoon bird: including Havianas designed sandals, Alexander Wang, contributed a dress (left), and Thakoon whipped up a yellow silk dress. Miss Davenporte and Charlotte Ronson also contributed.

The canary-colored wares, in a wide range of prices ($23-$8000) will be available at the corner of Wilshire and Roxbury until September 3.

One of my favorite up-and-coming designers, Alexander Wang, is giving us the goods: handbags and shoes, that is! For his upcoming Spring collection, Alexander is introducing hobo and cargo-style bags, in worn lamb leather, with touches of lizard and suede. The bags, approximately $500 to $650, will be launched initially at high-end stores like Ikram and Linda Dresner.

If that doesn't sound fabulous enough for you, he's also collaborating with the esteemed Manolo Blahnik on two pairs of one-of-a-kind shoes. I am definitely looking forward to seeing his new goods!

What are the odds that someone as foxy as this newcomer would have Fox as a last name? Hmmm... Megan Fox is literally sizzling in her Grecian-style dress at the Seoul premiere of Transformers. I only wish she had worn a piece of jewelry, so I gave her a gold woven cuff. I guess when you're as pretty as Megan, your face and hair are your best accessories!
