Maxi dresses are the ultimate way to exude a stylish laid-back look. Just look at Stella McCartney's Spring '08 collection, which was filled with feminine floral maxis. Also take cue from Nicole Richie who recently frolicked LA in a paisley maxi dress. There's something to be said about a dress that can make you look put together and feel comfy at the same time. Do what you will with the neckline but make sure your maxi is floor length. After all, anything shorter wouldn't be a mile-long maxi.

Fab Flash: Rachel Bilson Does DKNY Jeans

Last week it was Avril Lavigne, and this week it's Rachel Bilson joining the celebrity designer foray.

Rachel contacted DKNY Jeans to express an interest in working with them, and that's how her junior sportswear line, Edie Rose for DKNY Jeans, came about. The collection will include 15 pieces when it launches in September, including button-down tops, sweaters, jackets, tees, dresses, and dark wash jeans in a black, white, and yellow color palette.

Rachel seems dedicated to her designs: "This line is my main focus right now," she said. "I can't draw at all, so I won't be doing any sketches, but I am learning to sew. I think it's important to know more about the whole process of making clothes."

She named the line for her grandmother Edie, and Rose, a close family friend, because she didn't want to use her own name: "I want people to see these clothes for what they are, not just another line designed by another celebrity," she said. "I want the line to be taken seriously." From these first looks, will you be taking it seriously?

New York Fashion Week, Spring 2008: DKNY

Big floppy hats, high-waisted wide-legged pants paired with vests, maxi dresses, jumpsuits, and platform shoes: sounds like DKNY is experiencing some 70s nostalgia!

Jane Chung, DKNY's designer, contrasted colors in the trademark way with big, bold leaf prints, stripes, and colorblocking to a palette of orange, gray, black, pink, olive, and beige. Wide sash obi belts nipped waists and some of the dresses went off-shoulder, giving a bohemian vibe. And it looks like the safari jacket is still hanging around.

Jeans with sheen I've been noticing on many runways appeared here as well, in black, but my favorites are the bold prints and crisp materials. I'm not sure how I feel about all the orange on black, but it works! Alas, DKNY has never been one to shy away from bold color combinations.

I need new white jeans! These Radcliffe Denim EC2 Super Skinny Ankle Skimmer Jeans, $185, are too cute with the zipper bottom.
DKNY Jeans Denim Pencil Skirt, on sale for $38 (originally $69). I have been seeking a denim pencil skirt for so long, and though this one has a trendy high waist, at that price when the trend is over I won't regret it!
There's nothing like a new punchy pool-side tote and this Lacoste 'Summer Shop' Bag, $100, is the perfect size and I adore the vibrant emerald green.

Mary Janes are one of my all time favorite shoe styles...although this vintage style is often abused. Shame! Take these DKNY Shelly Rivet Mary Janes, $100, for example. They attempted to toughen up the MJ with black leather and studs but these are just not right. I think they would have been perf if they just had the row of gold studs along the bottom, and not on the toe. The shape of the shoe is very feminine, so they got that right. What do you all think? I think a few of you know how I feel about miniskirts; I'm not a huge fan, but I adore mini dresses. Reason being, they just seem either too juniory or too in-your-face for me. I am a long legged gal and I think when it's a mini dress at least you have the dress part to feminize the look. Volume has been a key player in reshaping many clothing items, and I am happy to see it in the mini skirt. These bell-shaped minis are flirty, modern and not overly sexy. Here is a fashion tribute to the tidey whitey. While lingerie brands such as Agent Provocateur have the racy lingerie genre covered, whatever happened to the simplicity of a sweet, white cover up? We've seen them throughout history - from Janet Leigh in 'Bye Bye Birdie' to Sigourney Weaver's eerie exposé scene in 'Alien' to Calvin Klein's infamous underwear ads. No doubt the tighty whitey is a classic, maybe it's just taking a hiatus.

New York Fashion Week, Fall 2007: DKNY

Here is a collection that touches on the 80's trend I've been seeing, but with a modern, sophisticated approach. DKNY delivered a strong collection that makes me want to adopt these looks NOW.

Starting with the color palette. Black and greys were paired with brights: acid green, fuchsia and electric lavender. Black and white prints added some depth. Smart layers were applied with matte tights and sleeves coming out of satin, silks and sheers. Some of Spring's minidresses will carry into Fall (yes!), and be more wearable thanks to the hosiery resurrection. Metallics showed up in the form of sequins; sequined leggings, tees and dresses created a 'wow' factor. Main accessories were stacked Mary Janes, knit berets and sheer scarves. Some classic DKNY references such as contemporary draping, boxy silhouettes and sporty touches brought this collection home.

My favorite look: an electric lavender satin mini mini dress worn underneath a fabulous oversized coat.

Mid-summer I dyed my hair a strawberry blond and have received so many compliments I may ride it through the winter. Apparently, the proliferation of cell phones and iPods has led to a decline in watch sales. That's a shame, because watches are an incredibly fun accessory.
