Things are getting haute in Paris this week, as the famous fashion houses show off their couture offerings. First up: Giorgio Armani and Christian Dior. Fab loved Dior's dresses, and I'm a fan of the models' beautiful hair and makeup.

The couture shows have begun in Paris. Now that we've seen the relaxed resort collections, I'm ready for drama, drama, and more drama. John Galliano's theatrics touched every aspect of his production: the clothes, the shoes, the makeup, the models, the celebrities. While last year brought bright, bold hues such as red, purple, and fuchsia, this year's palette was rather tame in comparison.
Pastel pinks, greens, yellows, and lilacs made their way onto ever-dramatic silhouettes. Origami shapes, crochet, ruffles, tulle, pleats, chiffon, and sequins are all part of this year's outstanding couture cast. While the colors are subdued, the footwear is anything but. Feminine clothes are contrasted by dangerous caged platforms with metallic triangle heels. Another fitting accessory is a '20s-style cloche hat in leopard, leather, and studs. As well, protruding corset belts have taken on new meanings. Be mistaken not; this collection may utilize pastels, but it's not fit for the chipper Church-goer. Nay.

There are only a few designers who can make a sombrero chic. John Galliano is one of the few. His cruise Dior collection referenced '60s tropics — something Galliano quite fancies. And what's not to love? Tunics, capri pants, perfect suits, psychedelic prints, silk shantung, oversized costume jewelry. Oh, and fabulously chic sombreros. All of the above arriving in Starburst colors.

As for the accessories, they had just as much splendor. Platform wedges and destined-to-be-the-next-It-bag Dior hobos were fanciful and colorful. You can tell Galliano has fun with his cruise collections. And why shouldn't he: Cruises are super fun, so I hear.

Crouching Models, Hidden Fashion

All my life I've been told by my mother not to slouch and to stand up straight. So then why is okay for models to purposely slouch, crouch and hunch over? Haven't their mothers taught them to stand up straight? All this hit me years ago when I noticed then-famous swimwear model Elsa Benitez crouching over in nearly every photo. It was as if she was built that way. Correct me if I'm wrong but models are supposed to show off clothes, but how can they show off an outfit if they're crouched over? One can't deny that a dress looks better on a girl who's standing up straight.

I understand that models are trying express creativity in their poses, but sometimes they take it too far. Browsing the latest magazines, I noticed that some crouches are more extreme than others: Dior's ads with Jessica Stam, and Emporio Armani and Dolce & Gabbana's latest ads. What do you think — are crouching models hiding fashion? Is this high fashion or simply foolish?

Take Marlene Dietrich, put her in the boudoir, and she'll embody the mood and look of John Galliano's latest collection for Dior.

Her mannish suits, top hots, and heavily made up eyes all appeared on the runway. But Galliano didn't stop at just emulating the Marlene Dietrich that was, he carried her into the present — and the future — with mafia-worthy pinstripes, Cavalli-esque animal prints, and bedroom-ready negligees.

The lingerie odes were tangible: transparency here, lacy edging there. And some looks walked the line between racy and brash. But an overarching riff on the 30s flapper girl who dabbles in her gangster boyfriend's clothing prevailed, looking very Galliano for Dior indeed.

It's tops in the fast fashion realm, and now Topshop is foraying into the vintage arena. Sweet!

Yesterday it launched Archive, an area dedicated to one-of-a-kind vintage finds - think Lanvin, Chloe, and Dior from the sixties and seventies, as well as London labels from the same eras like Lee Bender for Bus Stop, Biba, Mary Quant, Jean Veron, Ossie Clark, and Strawberry Studio. The clothes come from everywhere, vintage fairs to Ebay, and prices run from about $131 for a minidress to $1,000 for an Ossie Clark gown. Just what I need - another place to make the vintage hound in me drool!

This week, the House of Dior celebrated their 60th year of haute couture - sixty years since Christian Dior showed his first couture collection of sharp-shouldered suits with knee-length skirts on February 12, 1947.

In that sixty year period of time, Dior has much to be proud of. Christian Dior became famous for popularizing the "New Look" in the post-World War II era, which consisted of long flared A-line skirts and tiny corseted waists - a much more curvaceous form than the boxy suits of the early forties. After his death in 1957, an ambitious 21-year-old took over - Yves Saint Laurent, launched his career at the house of Dior - you can probably judge his success by his name recognition.

Carrying the house into the future is John Galliano, who celebrates his tenth anniversary at Dior this year - with all the pomp and circumstance he can muster - as seen at the couture show he put on this week. You have to hand it to the House of Dior - anything that can stay in fashion for 60 years deserves some respect - because we all know how fast things can go out of fashion!

The great John Galliano revealed his Cruise 2008 collection for Christian Dior on Monday night at 7 World Trade Center in New York City.

Talk about lots and lots of color and glitz! Waify but always beautiful models strutted down the crisp white runway in Indian-inspired tunics and jeweled head pieces. Others wore Palm Springsy glammed up taffeta and chiffon frocks, bustier-like bikinis, fitted skirt suits, cropped floral jackets, large hats, cat-eye sunglasses and small evening purses. It was as if two femme friends, one very Bollywood and the other addicted to Palm Springs chic, were on a very over-the-top vacay together. Fun in the sun!

There are so many mascaras out there, I feel like I could try a new one every day. I guess I'm not the only one, because according to the NPD Group, Americans spent $245 million on mascaras at department stores in 2005. That's a lot of loot for lush lashes. To help you choose, here's a look at some of the new lengthening mascaras on the market. (Tune in tomorrow for New Mascara Mania, Part II.) Here are some of my favorites.

Global Goddess Exotic Eyes Lash Building Mascara is by a smaller brand that's making its way into the mainstream. This water-resistant formula is meant to volumize and darken for serious pigmentation, and it contains Japanese camellia oil, African beeswax, and Indian mowrah butter to help soften and add shine. Lancome Défincils High Definition Mascara is out of this world. This has always been one of my top picks, probably because my gorgeous-lashed Mom wears it, and now there's a new formula meant to create even more length and definition. Dior Cropped Wool Jacket: Love It or Hate It?

If there's one thing I'll say about this particular piece, it's that it is undoubtedly Dior. But otherwise, the $5,600 Dior Cropped Wool Jacket, available here, leaves me pretty speechless. To me, it really straddles the realms of beautiful and ugly. For instance, I could do without the animalistic Mongolian wool trim, but I love the way the fur plays off of the delicate beaded flowers on the back of the coat. The big, floppy collar and scalloped seams are also particularly artful, but the overall effect leaves a lot to be desired. What do you guys think? Love it or hate it? Tell me your opinion below.

Hawaii's World Festival of Fashion

You know a shopping mall is high-end when it has its own Fashion Week. And starting today, the ritzy, 260-store Ala Moana Center in Honolulu is hosting its World Festival: Hawaii’s Fashion Week, which runs through Nov. 5. The 6th annual event includes a few fashion shows but focuses mainly on seriously fashion-focused events.

This sounds like a paradise for fashionistas, and not just because it's taking place in Hawaii. The best part is that World Festival attendees will have the chance to buy a number of special-edition handbags and other haute products, including a MAC Cosmetics silver overnight makeup case. Though these were created in very limited quantities just for the event and are available only in Hawaii, the products are fun to admire as eye candy. This chartreuse cocktail-length dress from Dior's 2006 resort collection is truly unique. With its one-shoulder, bare-back design, this Dior Sequined Dress looks almost as if the bright georgette is simply draped across the shoulders. I also love the surprising gold sequined hem that resembles a city skyline. I think this is truly stunning, but it's also very unorthodox, so I can see how some people might be turned off by the arty cut. What do you guys think? Tell me if you love it or hate it.
