Designer Donna Karan has devised a genius money-saving marketing plan. Instead of spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on a new ad campaign, she used runway photos from her Spring '09 collection. The beautiful result is below. Of course, the catwalk shots have been reinterpreted and given a new layout. “We wanted to get our message across in a creative way but with a consciousness,” Karan said. Makes complete sense. Amid a sea of dramatized ads, it's refreshing to see something authentic. The runway is where it all begins, so why not spotlight it further? What do you think? Source

Donna Karan's Fall collection is the epitome of Autumn. Warm browns, vivid rust, olive green, terra cotta, mustard, and burgundy were the plush colors the designer used to spice up her line. Now is the perfect time to draw inspiration from it and fill our closets with similar pieces. You can even get inspired from the changing colors of the leaves outside. Stick to one or two colors at most. I've found that gray tights are the perfect accent to any autumnal color. If you're still frazzled, study the Fall collections, see my suggestions below, and be full of Fall.

There's nothing more beautiful than a redhead in dusty pink. And who better to portray the frilly girliness that is Donna Karan's Resort '09 line than model Karen Elson? "Karen has this paleness of skin, this white skin that was so delicious," the designer said. "There is a little bit of decadence and glamour, but at the same time honesty to it." This is the designer's first-ever resort ad campaign, and she's done a fine job. Starting from the soothing color palette to the delicate fabrics and Karen's nonchalant posing, it's quite memorable. New York Fashion Week, Spring '09: Sash Belts

Belts have been a key accessory the past year. It's clear why: a belt defines a waist, creates contrast, and encapsulates the female form. Even though we saw a belt in nearly every scene in the Sex and the City movie, for Spring, belts have loosened up and taken notes from martial arts. Wrapped fabric, cinched scarves, and obi belts stood out among the belt bevy. Designers presented these styles through many different muses. Donna Karan's subtle obi proved you don't have to be a black belt to be bad-ass.

Behind the Seams: Nordstrom Fall 2008 Designer Preview

Seeing runway photos is not nearly as enticing as seeing the clothes live, and Nordstrom's Designer Preview 2008 reiterated that fact. For example, Bill Blass's gray/black tulle-bodice strapless dress — you know, the one Anne Hathaway wore at the Get Smart premiere — literally came to life before my eyes on the catwalk. While I admired it on Anne, I fell madly in love with it that night because I saw the way the bottom half of the dress danced as the model pranced down the runway. Donna Karan, Stella McCartney, Derek Lam, Missoni, Valentino, Michael Kors, Peter Som, Burberry Prorsum, Vera Wang, and Versace also each showed about a dozen Fall looks.

The night was centered around the runway, but the pre- and postparty was also a blast. Clothes hanging on tall racks gave guests, including myself, the chance to get up close and personal with their catwalk faves, while champagne and hors d'oeuvres kept us satiated. Oh, and I got to meet the ultimate San Francisco socialite, Joy Bianchi!

Donna Karan loved Kate Moss so much in her Spring Campaign, she decided to use the popular supermodel to represent her Fall/Winter '08 collection. Shot by Alas and Marcus Piggott, the ad depicts a very sensual and mysterious Kate awaiting her departure on the Orient Express. Karan states, "There's a romantic classicism, a little darkness, an Eastern European kind of decadence. She was on a train . . . on the go, but feels intimate and sexy at the same time." The ad features Moss sitting amongst a selection of Karan's newly launched handbag collection and was shot at the Union Station in downtown Los Angeles — could have fooled me! She looks like the quintessential classic beauty in a dark crimson suit and I love the old-school styling of her hair and makeup. Totally glamorous and classic. Source

2009 Resort: Donna Karan

While Stella McCartney brightened up her resort, Donna Karan lightened things up. The designer called her 2009 resort line, "Bonjour New York." Well, bonjour Donna! This time around, she served up lots of girlie but with understated sexiness. Step into Karan's boudoir and you'll find a gentle color palette; peony, rose, petal, nude, and champagne. With such soft colors, one would imagine a collection far too feminine, but such is not the case.

The irregular silhouettes and heavy fabrics balance out the whispering hues. Black cropped jackets and hefty ruching help ease the femininity, while bows, skirt suits, and feathers feed into it. It may sound complicated, but one look at the ethereal quality of the clothes and it all becomes clear: Donna Karan is injecting fun and flirtiness into resort-wear. And why not? Isn't resort the time to let your hair down?

Powerful coats in brocade, feathers, and satin styled followed. Though kept to a bare minimum, some glitter and sequins appeared on berets and clothes. Victorya and Ricky came to blows over pretty much everything, Jillian was worried Kevin wouldn't finish his hot shorts in time, and Donna Karan made a guest appearance — lucky for Sweet P her dress looked straight off the DK runway.I was a little confused about some of the "out" trends . . . some didn't seem so much on the outs to me. Underwear as outerwear was all over the Marc Jacobs Spring runway, neon keeps making appearances, and fringe and flares have worked their way back in, too. New York Fashion Week, Spring 2008: Donna Karan

As New York Fashion Week drew to a close, Donna Karan positioned herself to end the schedule with a bang by presenting her collection yesterday, the last day!

And what a bang it was: beautiful off-the-shoulder jersey column dresses, slim-fit suits with portrait collars, and full high-waisted a-line skirts all showed. The color palette was very safari-chic, with lots of caramels, beiges, creams, nudes, and dark browns punctuated with a few red and indigo pieces.

A very womanly aesthetic remained prominent, just like so many other New York shows this season; it was all about dresses and skirts - no pants and only a few shorts appeared. And say ta-ta to trapeze silhouettes - waists were cinched with wide sashes and buckle belts.

New York Fashion Week, Spring 2008: DKNY

Big floppy hats, high-waisted wide-legged pants paired with vests, maxi dresses, jumpsuits, and platform shoes: sounds like DKNY is experiencing some 70s nostalgia!

Jane Chung, DKNY's designer, contrasted colors in the trademark way with big, bold leaf prints, stripes, and colorblocking to a palette of orange, gray, black, pink, olive, and beige. Wide sash obi belts nipped waists and some of the dresses went off-shoulder, giving a bohemian vibe. And it looks like the safari jacket is still hanging around.

Jeans with sheen I've been noticing on many runways appeared here as well, in black, but my favorites are the bold prints and crisp materials. I'm not sure how I feel about all the orange on black, but it works! Alas, DKNY has never been one to shy away from bold color combinations.

You'd think that it would have existed before now, but it didn't. Before Charlie Scheips was commissioned by the Council of Fashion Designers of America to put together his new book, American Fashion, $32, there was no tome chronicling the rich history of American Fashion.

Happily, and thanks to Mr. Scheips, the nation's contributions to fashion since 1929, from the fingertips of Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Donna Karan, Mary McFadden, and more, are now at your fingertips. And lots of pretty pictures are promised as well. So if you're going to stick your nose in a good book, why not make it this one?

Redolent with rich earthy tones, the Spring 2007 collection from Donna Karan, presented Friday at New York Fashion Week, married flowy 1970s womanhood with Roman-inspired influences. Composed of army green, sandy shades, and batik-like patterns, Karan's loose, toga-style dresses were given structure by skinny belts, metal-ring details, and gladiator sandals. Most notably, this was one of the few collections that actually seemed as if it would look better on real, curvy women than on super-skinny models.
