On Our Radar: Karl Lagerfeld's Silent Tribute to Coco Chanel

While we eagerly await Coco Avant Chanel, check out Karl Lagerfeld's directorial debut in his 10-minute silent film toasting Coco Chanel in her youth. “It’s a funny movie, unpretentious,” says Lagerfeld. “Chanel was a charming woman, at liberty to seduce men. Everybody this year has decided to make a movie about Chanel, and you know their historical worth is not always too exact.”

Karl kept his cast tight, choosing model Edita Vilkeviciute to play Coco, his bodyguard to play a nightclub owner, and workers in his atelier to play parts in the movie. “I cannot take extras,” says Lagerfeld. “They don’t know how to touch the clothes.” The short film, described as light-hearted and fun, premieres in Paris this week — we can't wait for it to hit the web!

The seeker goes around the antique-filled home looking for her friends, who are hiding under couches and dressers, wearing lampshades and shopping bags over their heads. Queen Bee Victoria quietly sneaks into one of the bedrooms in her posh LBD and hides behind the curtains. Will she be discovered? Find out!

For Thanksgiving week my family escaped to Lake Tahoe for some wilderness R&R. Suffice to say, I had some much needed me, myself and I time. And, the air is so crisp up here. You know I love my old school hip hop bands and De La Soul is one of the best. This song jams for itself, but it's always cool seeing the fresh fellows of the group. The '80s classroom setting reminds me a bit of Saved by the Bell — but these fools are way cooler. They were super styley in their own unique way. And their music is always uplifting and creative — I am thankful for the soul, de la that is.

All this Twilight hype has me reimagining the days of adolescent love. When life was so simple, but love was so complex. The uncertainty, the anticipation, the drama! Every once in a while I'll be reminded of some young crush I had, and while at the time it was torturous, in retrospect it's bittersweet. This song was one of my songs of the Summer — such a good one for the car ride home after a concert. I didn't see the video until recently, and the mis(connection) between the pixie-haired girl and her crush is so classic. This song freakin' rocks.

With Madonna serving as Louis Vuitton's Spring muse, my mind wandered into Madonna world. "Like a Virgin" is a very playful song, but it stirred up controversy. The lyrics alone made parents blush. While gliding around Venice, Madonna set her tone: rebellious, stylish, iconic. No wonder she got so big, so fast. From day one, girls (and some boys) emulated her too-cool style signatures — lace, layered necklaces (and bracelets and belts), cut out tees, leggings, feathered hair. Since you're not going to be able to resist singing along — we all know the words — revel in Madonna's early years. How cute is she dancing around on the gondola? Too cute, too cool.

FABTV: The Cars "You Might Think"

Who doesn't love The Cars? They're new wave, but a smidgen pop. Their tunes are cool and catchy. Top that. I remember seeing this video as a wee lassie and loving its surreal playfulness. It's ultimately a romantic song, though lead singer Ric Ocasek isn't stalking his bride model Paulina Porizkova in it. Some blond chick, but she's still cute. The neon-like props against the black background are unmistakably '80s — it was 1984, after all. But the song still rocks. My favorite part in the video is when blondie opens her medicine cabinet to see the mini band rocking out — silly.

Chanel Iman fans, how lucky are we? The model has joined YouTube and is bringing us Chanel Iman TV so we can get to know her better. So far, she's made five short videos that provide a candid glimpse into her life and fun personality. They include Chanel thanking her fans, being silly with friends, fixing her hair early in the morning, and taking a flight to California. My favorite is when she gives her mom an '80s makeover before a shoot (below). So cute. I hope she'll take her camera backstage at fashion shows and at more photo shoots so we can get a peek into her professional life as well.

No video beats Michael Jackson's Thriller when it comes to Halloween time, and time in general — it is an eternal masterpiece. But I did my best to dig up another spooky vid. Spooky bands . . . hmmm, The Cure! No one is the goth master like Robert Smith and his teased black hair, chalky skin, and trembling voice. This is my favorite Cure song, though I kinda hate the video — it has a spider theme and I hate spiders. So I apologize if you do too and are watching this with a Halloween hangover. Alas, it's an ill song, where Smith gets invaded by an elusive Spiderman character. Cobwebs and creepy crawlers abound — hope you had a Fab Halloween!

Warning: This video is old school, and kinda of hokey, but this song is so good. It's so sexy! The Moody Blues were pretty dramatic, and though this video lacks drama, it represents a different time. A time when men wore dusty colored sports coats, buttoned up shirts, and shaggy hair. I love this mod look. Where have all the mods gone? With shots of Paris dispersed throughout, the song is really intoxicating. Sometimes heart wrenching. Maybe it's just me being a dramatic romantic. But listen in and mellow out.

One segment preaches that black makes you more intelligent, but this one is more useful because wearing leather can be tricky. We certainly don't want to channel '80s rock stars in the year 2008. We also learn leather is not limited only to jackets; it's translating onto pants, skirts, dresses, jewelry, and vests, so perfecting it is a lot harder than it seems. It's in its fourth series and if you indulged in the over-the-top Stylista last night and need a series dose of thinking television, check out tonight's episode where Stella McCartney and artist Ed Ruscha talk art and fashion, fashion and art. Here's a clip where the two are discussing how competitive both their industries are. Stella explains how one must have "survival instincts" in fashion, and really, in both industries, it's all about "selling, selling, selling." Intrigued? Watch tonight on the Sundance channel at 10 p.m.

P.S. I'm also interested in watching the upcoming Iconoclasts of skateboarder Tony Hawk and director Jon Favreau, as well as Cameron Diaz and architect Cameron Sinclair.

Reminder! Stylista Premieres Tonight

While Buzz can give you the complete lowdown, I'm here to remind you to simply watch. Stylista premieres tonight on the CW at 9 p.m. We got a too-short taste of fashion television via The Rachel Zoe Project, and Project Runway has concluded, so there's room for a new guilty pleasure, yes? I've watched the first couple episodes, and though it's a bit melodramatic, it is entertaining.

P.S. What I secretly love about the show is seeing the fabulous clothes Anne Slowey and the other editors at Elle wear.

FABTV: Whitney Port, From The Hills to The City

Last night on The Hills aftershow, Whitney Port debuted the trailer for her upcoming solo reality show, The City. We must wait until Dec. 29 to see the first full episode, but the trailer will do for now. In less than two minutes, we get a glimpse of boy drama (I guess Lauren rubbed off on Whit), the Diane von Furstenberg offices, and socialite Olivia Palermo. It appears she also works at DVF. We'll have to wait and see if she and Whit will be friends or foes. This clip makes it seem like Whit's knee-deep in relationship issues; good luck to her, but I hope we get to see more of her fashionable work life. Pop wants to know: Are you excited for Whitney's new show?!

Hopefully this is not one of those random times my brother is reading Fab . . . my brother did a dance to this song way back when we danced together. Yes, we danced together. He was quite the Mr. Fancy Foot and this song was everywhere at the time. It has such a steady beat and the lead's voice is so distinct. Despite the oddities and the Cirque du Soleil characters, you can't help but get sucked into the catchy song. The Pepto pink guitars are pretty cool, too. It's always fun to drive a guy crazy, "like no one else, ooh, ooh."

Paris Fashion Week, Spring '09: Viktor & Rolf

Watching Viktor & Rolf's virtual fashion show makes me wonder why more designers don't go this route. I smell a new trend. Old-school model Shalom Harlow is the only one on catwalk. Or, shall I say, only ones. It's all good though; it makes me focus more on the clothes and less on the models. Wait until you see how up close and personal the camera takes you. It's better than being in the front row! Per usual, these men know how to entertain. The oversize jewels and funky shoes are especially fun. And wait for the finale — a metallic Spirograph dress followed by multiple Shaloms applauding, and . . . well, watch for yourself.

Gwyneth Paltrow's role in Tod's Pashmy Dream doesn't stray far from her reality. The short film, directed by Dennis Hopper, portrays, Gwyneth as a famous star in Italy. While interviewing with a dapper reporter, Gwyneth gets bombarded by the paparazzi and makes a run for it — ditching her precious Tod's Pashmy bag. The little adventure continues with the reporter chasing Gwyneth around town trying to return her Pashmy, all of course, with it casually slung across his shoulders. From the mystical flame blowers to the whimsical soundtrack, this mini movie makes for a fun six-minute break. Enjoy!

There's nothing sexier than a man with moves. Dance moves, that is. So many people cite Saturday Night Fever as a favorite movie, but really, it gets kinda depressing towards the end, no? I guess they're just as romanced by the disco and the dance as I am. I do have an obsession with disco — what I would give for one night at Studio 54. What can I say, I love the night life. But back to Travolta. I have tried to memorize this dance routine, it's a goodie. Travolta had the looks and the bravado, but he also had the flexibility and the funk. Let's face it people, he gets down and dirty. Doesn't this make you want to go disco dance the night away? Go!

How hot is Lenny Kravitz? So hot that when I saw him live in concert, in high school, with my hot older quarterback boyfriend, I nearly ignored said boyfriend. Lenny looked like a god with his dreads dancing in the air, shirt unbuttoned, and leather pants — very similar to how he looks here. And this song, speaking of boyfriends, is one of the most uplifting breakup songs. The string quartet along with the soulful sounds make for a very groovy tune. The moody lighting and dark silhouettes add to the dark sensuality. Oh, and how hot is Lenny's turquoise jewelry? So hot.

All you need is some feathered bangs, large hoop earrings, a cropped black-and-white polka-dot jacket (OK, a little hard to find), a sequin corset (even harder), a flippy black skirt, and black jazz boots. And, some killer dance moves. This video is hard not to sing along to, and the words are so relevant to young love; how about some information please? . . .

Here, you see Axl straight off the bus from Indiana (where he is actually from) about to embark on a life of sex, drugs, and rock n' roll. And it went down just like that. The original band mates are seen here — Axl, Slash, Duff, Izzy, and Stephen — in their metal hair, leather pant, and bad attitude splendor. Let the good times roll . . .

On Our Radar: Valentino, The Movie

With words filled with sentiment and pride, Valentino stated, “Unfortunately, I’m very emotional and sensitive. I’m a human being and I’ve always loved my work."
After filming for two years, Valentino revealed his 90-minute documentary, Valentino: The Last Emperor, at the Venice Film Festival. The movie follows the designer's intimate life with fashion and Giancarlo Giammettii, seen below. “We had the cameras following us to the bathroom,” said Valentino. “It was a bit nerve-racking at times.”

I don't want to give away any spoilers, but look forward to behind-the-scenes fashion frenzies and witnessing Valentino’s six pugs — Milton, Monty, Maude, Margot, Maggie, and Molly (Pet, are you hearing this?) — receiving lush treatments. These pups are sprayed with cologne and decked out with diamanté chandelier earrings!

It's not often a television ad grabs me. Honestly, I fast forward through all ads these days — thanks, TiVo! But Levi's, the original denim brand, is always worth stopping for. They have fantastic ads. This one is a special pre-Fashion Week treat. The black and white combined with the music as narrator really draws you in to focus on the story. And the story goes, let's peel back the layers of fashion and frills to life's basics: Levi's and love. The backwards effect is a bit Memento-ish, but I feel it. Do you?

The Justin Timberlake William Rast videos, with model Erin Wasson as girlfriend and partner-in-crime, are unfolding. Here are three, back-to-back, to help you get to know William Rast. Timberlake will be performing twice during Fashion Week — at Fashion Rocks and his William Rast runway show. JT is trying to get in with the fashion folks for sure.

For me, William and lover kinda fall flat. Is it me or are they trying too hard? Too hard to be cool? They look great on camera, duh, and the cinematography is eerily interesting. But the smoking, swearing, cuts and bruises, rugged styles, and foreshadowing of a doomed relationship are too obvious. I hope the remaining videos are more action-packed and we see what kind of trouble these two beautiful people get into. Also, the lighting is dark and moody; makes for a dramatic effect but we can't really see the clothes.

FABTV: Biz Markie "Just a Friend"

Biz Markie had a story to tell and he told it right. The "your mama" jokes in the beginning of this video are funny, but when Biz gets on with his story of heartache, you can't help but take the guy seriously. It's refreshing to see a big, intimidating guy sing about heartache — it happens to us all. And he does it in a peaceful way. The catchiest part of the song, which everyone must sing along with, is the chorus, "Oh baby, you, you got what I n-eed," but Biz is a better rapper than singer. Dressing up as Mozart was a comical bit, too. The best cure for heartache? Laughter is the best medicine . . .

FABTV: A Preview of Model.Live

A new day-in-the-life-of-a-model show is on the horizon: Model.Live is debuting tomorrow night on Vogue.tv. We briefly mentioned it before, and here is another preview.

This show is different from the rest in that it's online and interactive — fans will be able to keep up with the daily happenings and communicate with the show's stars Cato, Madeline, and Austria via bebo.com. And this is cool: you'll be able to shop the models' clothes as they go from go-see, to agency, to the runway, and all the sidewalks in between. Ultimately, you can witness what it takes for a green model to be successful. All three gals have vastly different looks; my interest goes to Dominican Republic-born Austria, the youngest (and prettiest!). Check out the preview — mostly agents sitting around a table strategizing about the three hopefuls — and as of Aug. 22, new episodes will be broadcast every Friday for 12 weeks.

In this Spike Jonze directed vid, Fab favorite Sofia Coppola plays Janet, an injured gymnast. With all the Olympics hoopla, this was the perfect FABTV for right now. Sofia looks every bit the part: feathered bangs, scrunchied pony, toned bod (but maybe too skinny, have you seen today's gymnasts?). It's obvious it's not Sofia with the long shots and complicated maneuvers, but that just makes it more campy. I don't really pay attention to the music during the floor routines, but if someone chose The Chemical Brothers, that would be dope. I'm just sayin'. Drama-filled — oh no, did she injure her faulty ankle? — and easy on the eyes, watch to see if Janet wins another one for the trophy case.

FABTV: Janet Jackson "What Have You Done For Me Lately"

Janet just wanted a little shoulder bopping and head snapping time with her man. I totally get that. There are lots of songs about romance, but what about when your other half isn't doing much for you, lately? Attitude is one thing Janet had; she also had really big shoulder pads, but let's focus. Though I've never experienced a girls against boys dance-off in a diner, if it's going to be like this, I certainly want to. This song has a killer beat and a steadfast groove. Janet was also a master of group choreographed numbers, like this one. Please also note her gold lamé shirt, black blazer, and unmistakable smile (those chubby cheeks!).

I just spent 21 minutes with The Rachel Zoe Project, and you should too. I apologize in advance if you get in trouble at work. So you're not sure if you will tune in. Can designer cameos, celebrity dress up, vintage shopping sprees, water-damaged gowns, and tears change your mind? We get to see some of the glit, the glam, and the grind. We meet Zoe's team, and her hubby, and witness her rollercoaster relations with them. Zoe is definitely fit for TV with her megasized sunglasses, curly blond mane, and Rachel-isms. I doubt "Fashion is my drug and I'm addicted to it" was scripted — that's Zoe for you. I am biased, since I gabbed with her once upon a Diane von Furstenberg dinner time, but give Zoe a chance.

So I kind of have an obsession with late INXS singer Michael Hutchence. What can I say? He had great hair and a cool style, and the band made some rockin' sexy music. This is a catchy (sexy) song, and though I can certainly watch endless minutes of Michael dancing, it breaks off at about 3:19 to the "Mediate" section. You'll remember this, it's pretty cool. The band members take turn throwing signs in sync with the lyrics — words that end in "ate." It's hypnotic, no? Or maybe it's just Michael that's hypnotic.

Exchanging double kisses is not only standard in fashion circles, it's a sign of sisterhood (or brotherhood, depending). It's like a secret handshake among best friends. Nordstrom's Fall Designer Preview reminded me yet again of this, so I thought I'd provide a tutorial. Before your video lesson, it's important to know that French, Italian, Armenian, and other Mediterranean cultures do double kisses even outside of fashion events. And, unless you've been doing it since adolescence, it's hard not to fear bumping heads with your kisser. My advice is not to think too hard about it and let nature guide you. But first watch the video for specifics. xx

Don't tell me you've never done the Time Warp. When were you first introduced to The Rocky Horror Picture Show? I may have been too young — 15? — but it was so much fun. Needless to say, my friends and I were all over it, and snuck out to catch the famous midnight showing. (Mom, are you reading this?) I had two giant hickeys on my neck as a result. No, not from necking — they said it was a ritual that had to be done to all RHPS virgins. I gave in. It was so much fun.

P.S. A remake is in the works! Not sure how I feel about that, but I kinda can't wait to see.

Starting Monday, Sept. 8, at 11 p.m. EST/PDT on Bravo, we will be able to step into the glamorous and crazy world of Zoe. Juggling deadlines, attending fashion shows, and dressing celebrity clients are just some of the things we'll witness. I'm interested to know: Will you watch Rachel Zoe's reality show? According to the creators, if The Devil Wears Prada were a reality show, it would be Stylista. And Elle's fashion news director Anne Slowely would be Miranda Priestly. At the 2008 Summer TCA Tour, the creators, producers, and cast sat down to talk about the show. Here what Anne had to say.

How would you describe yourself to someone who has never met you or doesn't know of you?

A girl from Indiana who got really lucky and has worked very, very hard and has had an opportunity to see the best that the world has had to offer. I mean, my life is a bit of a fantasy, but the hard work keeps it real. As I said before, I love what I do. I feel very lucky and privileged, but I'm also very picky. I've had the privilege to become very centric and very picky.

Do you see yourself as more Miranda Priestly or more Donald Trump, or exactly how do you envision yourself in this role?

Just myself or maybe Lucy from Peanuts, "The doctor is in." No, I actually tried watching that movie (The Devil Wears Prada) with my mother who is 85, and she was like, "I don't get this. Take it off." I was like, "But, Mom, that's my life." She's like, "I don't understand it," so I actually haven't watched the movie. I'm just being myself, you know.

There are too many performers I either missed or still have yet to witness live. Jimi Hendrix, Elvis, and Nirvana are amongst the ones I will never see because, well, they are no longer. Led Zeppelin, Bjork, and Diana Ross are still on my list. Oh, Diana. Such a Fab diva. I love this quickie performance she did, with a fun Michael Jackson cameo at the end. From her sexy white Halston-esque dress (I've heard rumors it's Halston?) to the round white stage, it's all so very . . . disco chic. Diana's got the voice and the moves; my favorite is at the very beginning when she throws her head down then back up and begins to shimmy. Upside down, boy you turn me, inside out, and round and round . . .

On Our Radar: Vogue's Online Reality Modeling Show

America's Next Top Model just got some more competition. Vogue has teamed up with IMG's fashion and media divisions to produce an online reality modeling show titled Model.Live. Essentially, the show follows three models as they attend casting calls, strut the runways, and run through airports headed to New York, London, Milan, and Paris fashion weeks. The one with short hair, Madeline, looks like a cross between Agyness Deyn and Irina Lazareanu. The first of 12 eight-minute episodes will air August 19, here's a snippet of what's to come.

Madonna is a frequent visitor on FABTV but never has she been so upbeat than in this sing-a-long song. I love how Madonna manages to be sensual and not overtly sexual in her wet shirtdress and boy cut. While the mermen's glistening bodies are nice, my favorite bits are Madonna hamming it up for the camera. She looks like she's having so much fun rolling around in the waves and flirting with us. No surprise this black-and-white video was directed by Herb Ritts, who also directed my favorite Janet Jackson video. It's Summer Fabbies? Cherish the joy.

Girls do just want to have fun. Certainly a girl (woman?) named Kate Moss. Did you know about this risqué video? Kate always had a thing for the stripper pole — even before her stints at Agent Provocateur. And the stripper square. While it is refreshing to see a smaller-chested stripper, it's fashion icon Kate Moss! I prefer her in clothes, but she's got some moves. Realization: This is how Kate stays in shape. I have heard the S Factor workout is fun. Pass this one on to your man and see if he just won't know what to do with himself.

This has no bells and whistles. Sometimes a song doesn't need any of that. It's all about the lyrics. Ever need to switch the song because you get choked up listening to it? There are a few songs that have that effect on me — this is one of them. Jamiroquai is a longtime favorite of mine; he's funky, multitalented (adorable dance moves), and wears really fun hats. This song is so sweet, so romantic, it would bring any girl to tears, especially while on her honeymoon. Don't let the kindergarten script deter you, this song is about some serious love.

At the end of every great dance movie is a great dance scene. SJP and her Joey-Lawrence-look-a-like dance partner/boyfriend seriously cut a rug in matching crop tops and crazy jazz hair. They triumph the rich bitch and her robotic partner with their ultrasynchronized flips and agility. For the ultimate, go to 4:08 and take it in. Oh, and is "Dancing in Heaven" not the best digi dance song?

Instead of the sexy commercials I usually associate with Victoria's Secret, I was pleasantly surprised to see a more realistic attempt for their first-ever 2008 swimwear campaign. The video takes on a behind-the-scenes point of view featuring bodacious models Marisa Miller and Alessandra Ambrosio getting real with us on the beautiful beaches of St. Barths. Not only do the long-legged felines talk about their personal favorite swimsuits, they also point out VS's cool mix-and-match bikini feature. After all, who's the same size on the top and bottom? I'm sold. Off to check out their massive swimsuit collection — toodles!

I blame this music video for being 10 minutes late to work the other day. But it's so fun, how can one refuse it? Plus, Liv Tyler has been out and about promoting her new projects so Liv is on my brain. I loved this era of Aerosmith videos and the rebellious stories they portrayed. This is a classic Catholic school girls gone wild story, and Alicia and Liv tell it very well. From road tripping to stealing to stripping, isn't this what we all wanted to break free and do as teenagers? I also wanted to meet a hot tractor boy, go skinny dipping and steal his clothes. Crazy times.

If you can get beyond the spastic jazz music at the beginning, you'll enter a secret garden, aka Stella McCartney's 2009 Resort collection at a NYC park. Seeing pictures of Chanel Iman and Lisa Cant frolicking on the grass is not as compelling as seeing it on video. Models eating candy — gasp! — blowing bubbles and socializing makes me want to host a dressed-up picnic of my own (a light bulb just went off in my head). On a more serious note, Stella dishes about the reason for presenting in New York and her take on the latest collection, she even breaks it down into four parts) The girlie girl designer has set the bar high for future resort collection locations.

When I think of the songs that would make up the soundtrack of my life, this is most definitely one of them. Yes, it's one of the most played out karaoke songs but, I'm sorry, you can never play this song out. It's a rock n' roll romance masterpiece. All this wedding talk and I wanted to shake things up with a song that manages to be both sweet and saucy. Axl wrote the song about then wife Erin Everly (lucky b*tch) and it jolted everybody. It was — still is — an international hit. The video is classic GNR with snippets of the band performing and hanging out; and Axl exhibiting his snakey swagger we all know and love. Here's to love and rock 'n' roll!

Sometimes, whilst driving through the maze that is Los Angeles, ones destination is unknown. Such was the case a couple times during my jaunt through LA for the Chanel party. But that's LA for you. So, I thought of this bubbly song. Very New Wavey, Missing Persons produced a few hits — how can you resist the big-haired lead singers Barbie voice? She is a hot platinum mess with her pink streaks and leather get up with white fur pelts. The rest of the band favors big hair too — it was the '80s, after all. The strange settings and strange characters create a dream-like world, similar to Annie Lennox's "Sweet Dreams" video. A word of advice: never hesitate to stop and ask for directions! Life is too short and fabulous.

FABTV: Behind the Seams at the Chanel Cruise Extravaganza

The Cruise collections continue to entice but the memory of one past is staying with me, largely due to the fact that we got a hold of this as-if-you-were-there Chanel video from the event in Miami. From guests, including Anna Wintour, schmoozing preshow to playing the waiting game, the clothes emerge accompanied by poppy, upbeat music (Mony Mony!). Aside from the glorious clothes, after the show the US women's Olympic synchronized swim team appears to do their awesome routine. While they flutter in the pool in an interlocking Chanel C shape the models walk their finale and Karl takes his bow. Oh! And we get a shot of Diane Kruger bopping her head in the front row. Fab-u-lous.

Does anyone else seriously wish they were a superhero? I know I'm not alone, but sometimes I will settle for driving around a futuristic craft looking fierce with a slicked-back pony, liquid red lips, and a furry red vest. This video may be borderline Battlestar Galactica geeky but it's dope, OK. Shirley Manson was a diva in her own right, with her punky-posh style. But I love this song, too; it's got a good groove. Watch how the ka-booms in the video synchronize with the song. Special, indeed.
