Fashion Week Quickie: Colette x Gap Sets Up Shop in NYC

If you can't go to Paris, let Paris come to you. That was Gap's mentality when it decided to collaborate with renowned Paris boutique Colette to create a one-month installation in New York City.

The Colette x Gap concept store, adjacent to Gap's flagship store at 54th and 5th Avenue, will operate from Sept. 6 through Oct. 5 and will sell hard-to-find products from around the world. Products include Colette-designed Oakley sunglasses, limited-edition Gap tees with prints by Paris versus New York artists, Repetto BB shoes, and more. This is the first Colette store in the US, but hopefully it won't be the last. Oh, and you know I'll be sure to check it out when I'm in town for Fashion Week.

Coincidentally, two Fab girls went to the Gap after work on the same evening last week. But they went separately, looking for different items. They didn't run into each other in the store but the style stars must have been aligned. What one of them did find was the sale section, filled with back to school basics.

Take this Flutter-sleeve top ($35, originally $50). Wouldn't this look great with a pair of skinnies and funky sandals while it's still warm? On the flip side, layer it over a thermal under a tweed blazer when it gets chilly. Basics, redone.

I will always love the Gap. I mean, cotton basics? Cozy knits? Preppy staples? Oh, and I love their lip balm. Change is already underway at the company, with Patrick Robinson as head designer under the gun. This Fall campaign, shot by Mikael Jansson, is quintessential Gap — black and white, laid-back poses, American inspired. But the cast and the styling are fresh. The idea behind the campaign is to “Create Your Own GAP” by mixing and matching classic pieces to create an outfit all your own. We can all agree that $250 for a plaid button-down top is too much. Such was the case with Lauren Conrad's cute, albeit overpriced, Elizabeth and James shirt. Alas, plaid is already on the move to becoming a Fall frenzy, so get ahead of the trend on the cheap. I do, however, recommend teaming your plaid shirt with foxy high heels a la LC — this takes the look from totally geek to totally chic.

Fab Finding Follow-Up: Painting Party

Painting walls is never fun when done alone, so last weekend I tricked my friends into helping me paint my dining room. I held a painting party filled with bubbly and brushes, and yes, it was messy.

I started you off with these Minnetonka Suede Moccasins ($38) because they kept my toes cushioned and happy as I painted the day away. I asked you to help me find a cute, paint-friendly outfit, so let's see what you came up with!

Fab Finding Follow Up: Kite Runner

Sneak Peek! Gap Inc.'s Holiday Collection

Gap Inc., which owns Gap, Banana Republic, and Old Navy, recently held its Holiday 2008 collection presentation in NYC, and Fashion Wire Daily showed us some of the holiday goods from the three retailers. With increasing gas prices, we can all afford to shop with a budget-conscious mindset right now, and luckily, we don't have to sacrifice good taste.

At the higher end is Banana Republic, who will offer oodles of evening looks, including a Prada-inspired lace dress. Gap's Holiday line is less fancy and more comfy, with lumberjack plaids and wool coats. Old Navy (pictured left) will provide pops of color.

Gap will be unveiling a limited edition artist t-shirt collection set to launch in select stores and online May 15th. In celebration of the 2008 Whitney Biennial, Gap has joined forces with top contemporary artists in producing limited edition artist tees. Some artists include Chuck Close, Jeff Koons, Marilyn Minter, and Kiki Smith with t-shirt designs ranging from political messages to colorful abstract confections. I especially like the bright burst on the Glenn Ligon tee. The classically Gap ad campaign was shot by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin — Fab, as usual. Something to look forward to!

On Our Radar: Gap Announces Fall Campaign Lineup, Including Liv Tyler

Gap has long been known for choosing an eclectic mix of well-known A-listers and up-and-comers to star in their advertising campaigns. I already informed you about Ginnifer Goodwin's involvement in the upcoming Fall campaign, but the list goes on and on.

Actors Liv Tyler (who has modeled for the brand before, left), Hugh Dancy, Fabcon Clemence Poesy, Catalina Moreno, Edgar Ramirez, and photographers Scott Schuman (The Sartorialist) and Ryan McGinley are also featured in the ads, which will launch this Summer.
Rounding out the list are Marchesa designer Georgina Chapman, Fab Face Chanel Iman, screenwriter David Benioff, Visionaire founder Cecilia Dean, and Misshapes DJ Leigh Lezark.

Fab Flash: Ginnifer Goodwin Honored by MaxMara, Future Face of Gap

Fashion has officially welcomed Ginnifer Goodwin. She sat front row at Valentino in February, attended a showing of a Prada film in March, and now MaxMara has chosen to name her their "Women in Film Face of the Future" award — an award that went to Emily Blunt last year.

While we're at it, Ginnifer is also said to be one of Gap's Fall ad campaign faces. The girl is well on her way to being fashion gold!

Changing it up from her practical uniform of skinny jeans and boots, Kate Moss clearly had some fun mixing prints in her striped tunic dress and dotted scarf combo. The newest crop of Gap Design Editions are going to be in stores before we know it: April 15 is only a few weeks away! For this round, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Band of Outsiders, Michael Bastian, and Threeasfour all riffed on the classic white button-down ($78-$8, and Philip Crangi whipped up black and white resin cuffs ($45). I still wear the Rodarte Design Edition top I picked up last year; it's definitely not your typical white shirt. But I have to ask: Should the GAP be enlisting these designers to take on a different wardrobe staple? I would have loved to see what this group could do with a more affordable LBD. Nonetheless, for those who missed the Design Editions the first time around, get ready to pounce!

On Our Radar: Gap Design Editions With Phillip Lim and More

Last year's Gap Design Editions invited Rodarte, Doo.Ri, and Thakoon's to rework the classic white shirt, and this year we'll see what 3.1 Phillip Lim, Band of Outsiders, Michael Bastian, Philip Crangi, and Threeasfour can do.

For the collection, which debuts in stores April 15, Phillip Lim created four pieces: a tie-neck shirt, a bell-sleeve ruched shirt, and a layered-sleeve top, all $78, Band of Outsiders concocted a patchwork tunic ($8, and Threeasfour designed a camisole ($7 and a cutaway dress ($8.

The Design Editions will also incorporate menswear and jewelry this year, which is where Michael Bastian and Philip Crangi come in. Bastian produced an epaulet and a Western shirt for men, both $78, and Crangi came up with such looks as a white or black wide resin cuff ($45). Sounds exciting — I loved the collection last year!
