2008 Fall Couture: Jean Paul Gaultier

If Ursula from The Little Mermaid had a closet, many pieces from Jean Paul Gaultier's 2008 Fall Couture collection would hang in it. First thing you notice when dissecting this line is the intricate details such as piping that can be mistaken for octopus legs.
The bright colors — cobalt, neon yellow, orange, green — take center stage and up the drama factor. Protruding feathers on several dresses also stand out. Fur, leather, and satin play a key role. Leather gloves with neon piping are badass while fur collars are sophisticated. While most pieces are creature-like, some give a nod to the equestrian theme. I can't say that any of the pieces are translatable to real life but they sure electrocute the runway!

The Parisian designer has outfitted Madonna for years, from her Confessions tour in 2006 to the iconic cone-bra Blond Ambition tour in 1990, so I can't wait to see what iconic look he comes up with next! The KylieX2008 European tour starts in Paris on May 6 and ends in London in August.

"I've worked with him several times," she said of Jean Paul Gaultier, who designed her fishtailed frock. "When I saw this dress from his last collection, I knew I wanted to wear it."

Her white and silver mermaid gown was based on a similar dress from Jean Paul Gaultier's Spring 2008 couture collection — except that one was black and gold. So I'm asking you to step back, and imagine: Do you like Marion's dress as she wore it, or do you wish she would have worn the black and gold runway version? Consider a denim jumper, funky pair of shoes, or a rebellious bag. Denim's always a winner on the weekend so I say the more denim the merrier — just shake things up. But remember: Try to keep it one denim item at a time, there can definitely be too much of a good thing here.

I'm baffled by the strange leather piece around her neck so I gave her something more pretty and conventional. Doesn't she remind you of a young Cate Blanchett? While I would totally embrace a fuzzy Prada friend, they happen to run with a different social circle, so I'll settle for a more down to earth, i.e. affordable, homie. These fuzzies come in fabrics like angora, mohair and alpaca.

My style tip is to opt for a cuddly sweater and surround your waist with a skinny belt — oh so Marilyn Monroe.

Illustrated by The Simpsons layout artist, Julius Preite, these fun-filled pages feature the cast in collections and designers from the Fall RTW collections with a special cameo from my favorite all-time supermodel - guess who?!

With his over-the-top runway shows and cutting-edge couture, Jean Paul Gaultier never fails to shock or entertain us. For his Spring 2007 show at Paris Fashion Week, the big news was that Gaultier laughed in the face of all the skinny-model controversy by using a plus-sized model in his show.
