Platforms and unstable heels caused a couple crashes down the catwalks, though, so a flat backlash might be on the horizon. In the meantime, feast your eyes on Pilati's cold caged sandal for YSL and more fantasies . . .

I just died and went to Lanvin's heavenly candy shop. Alber Elbaz has done it again — he delivered inventive pieces but didn't alienate Lanvin's signature bold colors and voluminous silhouettes. This Spring collection leaves you wanting more. It offers everything from black to nude, to colors like chartreuse, teal, purple, and orange. Yum. Some of the dramatic wide-shouldered silhouettes are hard to work with; still, on the runway they work like magic. But what I really want to talk about are the accessories. Sparkly necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and clutches demand attention, but somehow don't steal the spotlight from the clothes. A perfect harmony has been created with the stunning clothes and wild jewels. Bravo, Alber, bravo!

Lanvin took a tale from the dark side for their Fall campaign. I have to say, this is simply too dark. The Spring campaign was just as creepy chic, but bubbled with the jewel hued dresses we have now seen oodles of times. With the similar dark backdrop, the black clothes blend right in. Bummer, the serious but sexy clothes are hard to see. I love the Liya and Raquel duo, though. They look as if they are strutting through some dark forest, but that's about it.Source

Maggie Gyllenhaal has a dark side. Her premiere looks for the action flick The Dark Knight not only complimented her, but they complimented the film. Maggie usually chooses dresses of the darker persuasion for her red carpet appearances — one of my favorites being her Proenza Schouler 2007 Oscar gown — but they work so well with her fantastic skin and retro look. She's conquered her recent movie-related appearances in favorite designers like Dries Van Noten, Lanvin, Stella McCartney, and Zac Posen. All dark, all fabulous, in my opinion. We're always praising Lanvin's womenswear designer Alber Elbaz, but for a second let's focus on its menswear designer, Lucas Ossendrijver. In Details, he shares invaluable fashion tips for men, but one in particular stood out and applies to both sexes.

"Friday-wear is very typically American. You have this office uniform, and then suddenly it’s the weekend and it’s the opposite. I think it’s better to mix the two and make officewear a little less formal and Friday-wear a little less casual."
A-men! That's the best advice I've heard in a long time, and if every American swore by it, the country would be a far more fashionable place. I say, let's start this today!

Fall Glimpse: Neck Fest

If Spring dabbled in statement necklaces, Fall was a full-on neck fest. Nay a dainty necklace here, a dainty necklace there; yay layers of chunky chains (Givenchy), costumey rhinestones (Balenciaga), jagged Swarovski crystals (Burberry), mixed media (Lanvin), and antique Indian masterpieces (McQueen).

The most innovative was perhaps Dries Van Noten (left), who fashioned his super-colorful, and no doubt super-heavy, neck pieces out of other jewelry items: ethnic bangles. Add a fur collar atop a stellar collection, and this neck fest would make any vampire pounce.

We got word a while back that Alber Elbaz was working on a Lanvin denim collection with Acne Jeans. At last the collaboration has come to fruition and where there's a new collection, there's a party. Eva Mendes, Liv Tyler, and Rachel Zoe all put on something blue and celebrated alongside Alber Elbaz at Hotel de Crillon in Paris (where the Crillon Ball was held on The Hills). Lucky ducks! There were balloons floating, models in denim roaming, and lots of posing. Step inside the fabulous shindig.

This group of Resort looks can best be described in three "L" words: loose, layering, and legs. Things are shaping up pretty nicely for my Winter vacation. I can choose to be whimsy, like at Lanvin (pictured) or Cynthia Rowley; I can be downright bold, seen at Naeem Kahn and Malandrino; or, I can play it cool wearing Jason Wu, Max Azria, and Vera Wang. Whatever I choose, I will be comfortable, play with silhouettes, and bare some skin. Yep, sounds like a Fab getaway to me.

Seeing Vogue Paris editor Carine Roitfeld and her daughter Julia in such powerful ensembles at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival makes me wish my mom and I were that rich and famous! There were a lot, and I mean a lot, of stunning red-carpet looks this week, but no one was as captivating as this fashionable French mother-daughter duo. Natalie Portman in Givenchy came in at close second, but Carine and Julia take the crown because I believe in power in numbers. The first of the two — Carine in Lanvin — were slick women in black. Later, at the amFAR event they were bombshells in Balmain (cue lightening sound effects). Fierce.

Looking at these editorial photos from Numero Tokyo 15, it makes me wonder why Kai Milla, the designer of the white dress Janice Dickinson wore in an episode of her modeling reality show got so mad when she jumped in a water fountain with the dress. After all, these Missonis and Lanvins look so much prettier under water. They really come to life and take shape. Model Marcelina Sowa's facial expressions may be stronger on land, but with such grandiose dresses in your sight, one forgets the face.

This shoot also reminds me of one of the episodes of Make Me a Supermodel where the models had to do an underwater challenge. Isn't fashion better under the sea?!

Talk about poor planning. Actresses Kristin Scott Thomas and Natalie Portman both showed up to the 2008 Cannes Film Festival in blue Lanvin dresses. It's bad enough that they're both wearing the same designer to the same premiere, but throw on top of it the fact that they're the same shade of blue. I have always loved Julianne Moore — I think she is Hollywood's most talented redhead. Amber Waves made waves at the Cannes Film Festival in this black and blue Lanvin. The ultra-chic blue silk satin dress with ruffle neckline under a black silk tuxedo blazer suited her perfectly. She made it more casual by pushing up the jacket sleeves (or was she hot?) and wearing a pair of adorable Chloe sunglasses. Her razored cut was perfection; she looked cool and comfortable.

She may be a bit covered up for the heat of Cannes, but just toss off the blazer and it's still a super Fab look. You all loved Angelina at Cannes and weren't sure about Eva Longoria, but I think this French-friendly fit takes the Cannes cake.

His tongue-in-cheek creations hit the Dover Street Market display windows a few weeks ago. They include a kaftan (for the bride in the sun), a trench (for the on-the-go gal), a tulle cardigan (for the romantic), and many other styles that go against the classic grain. Innovative indeed, but did we expect anything different from a man who sports a bow tie nearly as big as his head?

What I love most about this is that this would translate seamlessly into a daytime look with a more casual tee and some reaccessorizing. It's no secret this Spring is set to be saturated with color. Lanvin got the inspiration rolling by placing their deliciously bold party frocks in a painterly setting. Renaissance colors embolden the wildflower background and set off the vividly colored dresses and the model Olga Sherer's pale skin. Photographer Steven Meisel was an absolute visionary in his approach. These may be some of my favorite ads of the season — what about you?

What is Fab's Achilles’ heel? Gimme shoes! Designer, contemporary, cheapy, high, flat, boots, ladylike, utilitarian, edgy — I want it all. This Spring is going to be a dangerous one because the shoe offerings are a plenty and a fabulous. I already touched on the unexpected but very cool boots of Spring, and a storm of gladiators is coming to cover many a feet come warmer days. As for the rest? Like this oddball from Marc Jacobs (pictured), they'll knock your socks off.

Spring has a diverse group of trends for us to eat up and those seeking solstice can feast their eyes here.
