This Week's Fab Favorite: Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen

A while ago I said I hated taupe. Times change. I especially thought it wasn't a flattering color on blondes. Put two adorably stylish blond twins in taupe together and you have this week's Fab favorite. Mary-Kate and Ashley have been about town(s) promoting their book Influence. This week they were autographing books at Borders in Brentwood, CA. As expected, they complement each other while maintaining their individual styles. But this time they taught me to love a color I once dismissed. That, is the power of the Olsen.Ashley, always the slightly sleeker, wore a leather mini, a dark sweater, and a lush taupe velvet jacket. I adore the jacket; it's slightly vampy, entirely luxe. Mary-Kate loosened up in a silky taupe utilitarian dress cinched with a bright red belt. She loaded on jewelry to add some boho flavor. Both went the exposed leg route, better to show off their edgy shoes. Ashley in the new YSL double platform shoe-to-have and Mary-Kate in Proenza Schouler cut-out booties. I wonder if they still play sisterly dress up and get ready together — looks like it!

Freaky or Fabulous? PETA Protests the Olsen Book Signing

Many of us are influenced by the Olsens, be it Mary-Kate or Ashley. But clearly PETA isn't. In fact, members of the organization stood in front of Barnes & Noble in New York City's Union Square yesterday to protest the girls' book, Influence. They wore masks resembling the twins and held up signs insulting their fur-wearing ways. Do MK and Ash deserve this treatment? Tell me, is this act freaky or fabulous? Source

Who can you scribe has influenced you? The more I think about it, the more people I could pay tribute to. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen looked understated stellar at Barnes and Noble promoting their book, Influence. We can't wait to learn all about who influenced the sisters, but we've already been influenced by their style, and business, prowess. No Olsen is complete without towering heels. Other than Mary-Kate's black double platform Yves Saint Laurent pumps, she chose a professional LBD. Bare legs do her justice and tousled hair is pretty and easy. Ashley stepped it up in gray suede platforms, The Row liquid leggings, and a silky white double pocket blouse. Both Olsens have influenced me, what about you? Source

Behind the Seams: Elizabeth and James Launch Party at Selfridges

London got a little more stylish last night when Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen showed up to launch their clothing line overseas. Elizabeth and James is going to be sold at Selfridges — I'm sure that excites many a British girl, including our own FabSugar UK. Among the locals who helped the twins celebrate were Henry Holland, Alexa Chung, Pixie Geldof, and Daria Zhukova, designer of Kova&T. Clothes were shown, pictures were taken, a merry time was had by all.

First, their jewelry collaboration with Robert Lee Morris, and now the duo have announced an upcoming footwear collection with Steve Madden.The shoes, an addition to the Elizabeth and James brand, will be under the creative direction of Mary-Kate and Ashley. It is said to complement their funky and hip collection. Delectable offerings will be sold at high-end specialty retailers in mid 2009. Prices are still to be determined.

Our favorite twins are at it again and we couldn't be happier, or rather, our BFs couldn't be happier. Next on tap for Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen: designing a men's collection.

The line will be a part of their upper-tier label, The Row. Ashley came up with the idea and has started the design process for the collection which is rumored to debut in Fall '09. Ashley is known for her cool mixed masculine style so it kind of makes sense. Excitement for all.

There are only a few things that can make me literally drop everything I'm doing and one of them is anything Olsen related. So that's your cue — stop everything you're doing because Elizabeth and James's Fall '08 collection photos have arrived! Seeing as how you all loved our Elizabeth and James Spring giveaway, we thought you'd appreciate these.

As with any project that Mary-Kate and Ashley undertake, their newest line is a fusion of gritty and girlie. Just what the Olsens ordered. Draped dresses are paired with sheer tights, menswear suits are prettied with tie-neck blouses, and tulip skirts are toughened up with black tees. The theme this time around is rock 'n' roll. Old-school vinyl records, guitar cases, and recording studios set the tone. Rock on sistas, rock on.

Since 2005, Melinda has been creating hand-crafted necklaces, rings, earrings, and bracelets from the finest stones. But her passion for bling began way before that. When she was a little girl, Melinda would take her mother's jewels and re-design new creations.

Her hard work paid off because now her collections are sold in well-known boutiques like Fred Segal, Lisa Kline and Ron Herman. The prices aren't cheap — $95 to $350 — but given the quality and beauty of each piece, it's well worth it.

Fab Flash: Ashley O. Peddles The Row

Late last week, Ashley Olsen made an appearance at a Dallas boutique to promote her designer collection, The Row, wearing a cashmere tunic and black leather leggings from the line.

Since Spring 2007, when the collection debuted with 18 knits, production has expanded to 110 looks for Fall 2008, including a $4,500 natural kangaroo coat and a $4,000 seamed black leather poncho with raw edges.

"What it always comes down to is simple, clean lines and beautiful fabrics," Ashley said. "The whole collection is based on fit and quality." She also mentioned that everything is made in the US, with the exception of cashmere knits, to maintain tight quality control.

Ashley is on hiatus from New York University to focus all of her attention on the label, taking the leading role so Mary-Kate can focus on her acting career. As Rae Miles, The Row's commercial director stated, "Ashley is there full time, every day. She's in all the fittings, picking all the fabrics and making the final decisions." Sounds like devotion!

The site features games, videos, merchandise, and you can even take action by sending the Olsens a letter. This is an aggressive attack on PETA's part — do you think they've gone too far this time?

What do we see from the sisterly designing duo? Lots of loose-fitting coats, mod shift dresses, oversized blazers (Ash's favorite) and cool dresses. Basically what you would find if you raided the sisters' closets!

Forgive me for sounding like a broken record, but Ashley and Mary-Kate are serious style icons in the making. We should look to them for inspiration whenever we can because they really are designer muses; it is wise to follow their dramatic trends-in-the-making choices. Though there are favorite similarities (shoes!) between the avant-garde sisters, they do use different approaches to dressing. Ashley's look is more streamlined and modern, while MK's is more tousled and vintage-inspired. I thought it would be fun to compare and contrast the recent outfits they wore while shopping at Maxfields in Los Angeles. Both are edgy, both are Fab, but which do you identify with more?

Top: Leave it to Ash to make a black scarf and a men’s t-shirt look androgynous chic!

Bottom: Black cigarette jeans are always
flattering.

Accessories: The Fendi bag reinforces her sleek look by adding clean lines. Those Alaia platforms are killer! The dramatic straps make the shoes the focus of the outfit. I’m guessing that was her intention. The bulky watch compliments her boyish look and her modern aviators are bad ass.

Top: It’s no surprise MK is wearing a voluminous cardigan as a dress; she can get away with it because it’s loose and she’s petite.

Bottom: Non existent. But props to her for letting her skinny stems breathe!

Accessories: Her Prada fringe bag adds some much-needed texture to her otherwise simple outfit. Her patent mule Loubs are very old Hollywood and the traditional aviators are classic.

Good news for all of you Mary-Kate and Ashley fashion fans! Now that they have the luxury market covered with The Row, Mary-Kate and Ashley have announced the launch of a new contemporary sportswear line, Elizabeth and James, coming out this Fall.

The line is named after their siblings and will include blazers, washed leather jackets, military-inspired tops, shrunken tees, oversize tees, pencil skirts, cashmere sweaters, fur jackets, and cashmere coats, all playing with a masculine/feminine theme. There will also be silk dresses and a sequined minidress inspired by one of Mary-Kate's vintage finds. The collection will be sold at Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, and Intermix, with a price range of $40-$452 - making it slightly more affordable than The Row. Exciting!

Here we have both of the enigmatic Olsen twins fully decked in Chanel. To me, there is a clear winner: Ashley (right). I love the peekaboo effect of being buttoned up and swimming in two-tone chains on top and showing off perfect legs on bottom. And those shoes? Fierce. As for Mary-Kate (left), she's swimming in her Chanel, not that I wouldn't mind swimming in Chanel, but you know what I mean. Oh but I love her little black-and-white spiral clutch!
