This week was bursting with beautiful looks thanks to the Rome Film Festival. While some dazzled in their fancy frocks, others preferred to keep it more casual and flirty. Ashley Tisdale shined in her fun embellished Jenny Packham dress, while Margherita Missoni rocked in a pair of shiny harem pants. Want to be a solid gold hit at the holiday soiree? Do like these gilded ladies and do it up in sparkling, golden-hued gowns. I would like to point out that all three of these starlets are blondes — brunettes and redheads can shine equally as strong. Elizabeth Banks is straight up glam in her Kaufman Franco slit-front gown, Richie went retro in her heavily beaded Reem Acra, and Jessica Biel outshined in a strapless Oscar de la Renta column. I included gilded cocktail options for us, it's more pared down, unless your hot self has a fabulous upcoming red carpet to grace.

There is a reason why every woman loves Oscar de la Renta. Just look at Kerry Washington at the premiere of Lakeview Terrace. The column gown fits like a glove, the citrus print is gorgeous and Kerry is positively glowing. You can tell she loves this dress, too. The gold cuffs on both arms add a luxe touch and her coral dangly earrings elevate the look. Some would argue the hemline is a tad too long, but when it comes to floor-grazing gowns, I'd rather it be on the longer side. It creates drama and when she walks the tail ever so slightly follows her. Kerry proves an exotic gown can shine in the middle of the city and not just at an exotic locale.

Oscar de la Renta. Pure, defined, elegant. No matter what your personal style, one has to admire the works of art that is Oscar. And admire I did, from the balcony of the Upper East Side venue, overlooking top editors, socialites, and Jennifer Lopez. The collection kicked off with some colorblock bathing suits — that was a surprise — and eased into tie-dyed skirts, white silk crepe blouses, silk sweaters, linen pantsuits, and ruffled blouses. Almost everything was cinched with Alaia-resembling perforated leather corset belts. These pregown treats were paired-down elegance, but architectural shapes and prints were thoroughly modern. Navy, white, and yellow pieces had a nautical flair, and de la Renta's favorite print of all — ikat — was reinvented yet again. Then came the gowns, from all directions on the runway, creating a stir of decadence. A navy embroidered backless lace gown was breathtaking, Coco's white silk peplum gown with navy Harlequin embroidery was stunning, and the finale dazzler: a silver maco bead embroidered strapless gown was heaven on the catwalk.

If anyone knows how to make resort as luxurious as can be it's Oscar de la Renta. In a kaleidoscope of colors, there were enough day dresses, crisp separates, grownup trousers, and ball gowns to keep the Upper East Side content for a while. There was a bit of volume play with sleeves as well as super puff, super fabulous, ball gowns. Oscar continues to preach the sassy one-shoulder style. Bags were structured and jewelry was ethnic and nature inspired. Oscar's vivid prints always win me over as well as his strategic — never overdone — placement of bows. Add to that lace and ruching and you have a seamless paean to the cruise ~~Gods~~ Goddesses.

We all use Google, so why not make our search engine as fabulous as we are? iGoogle has introduced artistic homepage themes and the ones us Fabionistas will appreciate are those designed by Dolce & Gabbana, Oscar de la Renta (mine, below), Diane von Furstenberg, and Tory Burch. I played around and first picked the leopard Dolce & Gabbana background, but later decided Oscar de la Renta's colorful Ikat designs from his Spring '08 show are more fun. It only takes a minute so get on it!

It really does have a dress for every type of bride. You want an overdramatic gown to match your overdramatic personality? Done. You want to go simple in a delicate short dress? Go for it. You want to channel an over-the-top prairie gal? He has a gown, and hat, for you too!

If I had to take my pick from Oscar's confections, I'd go with this strapless one with the dramatic ruffled hemline. It's simple on top and fun on the bottom — the perfectly balanced bride.

2008 Oscars Fashion Preview: Expect Color, Ruffles and Beautiful Beading!

Witnessing the Oscars red carpet is one of my favorite fashion moments all year. We'll have to wait until Sunday to see who wears what, but until then, I've got a sneak peek to hold you over. Oscar fashion coordinator Patty Fox put together an Academy Awards fashion preview, highlighting the vivid colors and sparkling jewels that are expected to rule the red carpet this year.

Partnering with glam Oscar-worthy designers like Giorgio Armani, Valentino, Oscar de la Renta, Elie Saab, and Marchesa, Fox showcased gowns that spoke to the style of past Academy Awards winners: for Charlize Theron, a ruched tangerine Pamella Roland number, for Julia Roberts, a one-shouldered red chiffon Valentino gown, and for Renee Zellweger, a gold strapless Angel Sanchez dress.

Meanwhile, earlier this week I put together my own Oscar red carpet wish list — I'm biased, but I think mine's better!

As always, Oscar was all sophistication and elegance. The models trotted out to a live performance by Regina Spektor, who crooned and played a grand piano in the background. Full taffeta and tulle skirts swished by, ornately embellished — all with grandeur.

At times, the checkerboard tweed overcoats, shimmering skirt suits, and vivid silks were so beautiful I found myself subconsciously holding my breath. Fuzzy fur toques, beaded shearling vests, and rich jewel colors hinted at a Russian influence. Oodles of dresses for all occasions, Oscar's specialty, were present: day, cocktail, and gown. They all had one thing in common — the appearance of decadence. Ultimately, that's what Oscar is all about . . . a classic decadence.

I'm foreseeing full A-line skirts, uber florals, and lots of bright colors come Fall 2008. Metallics and ruffles are also still staying in the cards.

This collection was a bit of traditional Oscar de la Renta - with poofy, dramatic dresses and full-of-sheen separates - fused with a more modern, androgynous Oscar. There's no doubt that the designer stuck with the overarching Spring theme of femininity, but he stayed away from flowy and went the structure route.

There were dramatic necklines, long red carpet gowns, bows, ruffles, floral patterns, pleats, metallics, pantsuits, shift dresses, skirt suits with cropped jackets, tuxedo-style frocks, bubble silhouettes and lantern sleeves. Whew! There's was a lot of everything.

It's obvious that Oscar tried to appeal to many types of women: the minimalist, the flamboyant and the eccentric. Many tribal-inspired dresses in black, brown and white were shown - for those who like to explore the wild side of fashion.

On Our Radar: Fashion Targets Breast Cancer Initiative

Since 1994, when the initiative was founded, the Council of Fashion Designers of America's charitable interests have been with Fashion Targets Breast Cancer (FTBC). To raise awareness and money for its cause, the CFDA has partnered with Net-a-Porter to begin selling limited-edition FTBC items created by designers like Ralph Lauren, Rachel Roy, Oscar de la Renta, and Diane von Furstenberg.

Though the items will be sold throughout the year, the first available is a Ralph Lauren FTBC polo shirt, $75, exclusive to Net-a-Porter. The net proceeds of all sales will stay in the purchaser's country, whether in the U.S. or abroad.

Trend Alert: Minaudières

Think back to the phantasmagoria of awards season a few months back. You will notice that while the gowns and the actresses in the gowns were the main sights to see, the shoes and handbags got less attention. In most cases, ladies carry the exclusive minaudière - a fancier than fancy little evening bag - as to not distract from the glowing actress. Minaudières actually date back to the Roaring Twenties fashion scene, but it wasn't until 1963 when Judith Leiber affixed thousands of crystals onto a tarnished metal frame when they really took off.

Now these little stunners are going to be available for us common folk, at common prices, who don't have thousands to spend on a classic Judith Leiber one. Completely wedding appropriate, I would love to see someone clench one wearing a sleek tank and jeans - just for the hell of it!

Womenswear Designer of The Year, Oscar de la Renta has surely kept his favorite customers - the ladies who lunch and Anna Wintour - happy with this collection. There are plenty of fitted suits, floppy hats, party dress, and polka dots to go around.

I think my favorite look has to be this coral taffeta ruffled number, left, which is surprisingly similar to a J. Crew dress that I've had my eye on recently. There are a few misses in the collection - a black and white polka-dotted dress with frills and a basket-weave pattern near the bottom comes to mind. But I've got to give Mr. de la Renta credit where credit is due: he does do the monochrome knee-length party dress reminiscent of those SJP wore in Sex and the City very well.

Ellen Barkin hosted last night's Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Fashion Awards in NYC. The event, which Council President Diane von Furstenberg made sure started on time, was attended by celebrities such as Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Kate Bosworth, Heidi Klum, and Debra Messing, among others, as well as by top designers and fashion insiders.

Oscar de la Renta and Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez for Proenza Schouler tied for Womenswear Designer of The Year while Ralph Lauren took home the prize for Menswear Designer of the Year.

Celebrity Style: Kerry Washington

Kerry Washington looked stunning in this Oscar de la Renta gown at the premiere of her new movie I Think I Love My Wife. As you can see, this yellow gown is fresh off the Spring runway, and I must say, I love how the yellow really pops on Kerry's beautiful dark skin.

Although we all wish we could adorn designer dresses such as these, unfortunately I don't think our bank accounts agree! We found a couple of more wearable options that still cater to the fresh yellow trend that is so hot right now.
