Besides being one of the biggest fashion designers in the world, Donatella Versace is also a philanthropist. After seeing the damage caused by the Sichuan earthquake, the designer decided to take matters into her own hands. In a recent visit to the city of Sanjiang, Versace saw the travesty that killed over 70,000 people back in May. “When you see things on television, you don’t know if it’s true,” said Versace. “I wanted to see it with my eyes and touch it myself.”

This new rendition is still sophisticated, but the leather gives it a rockin' rad attitude. How cool is that?

Fab Blab: Angelina Jolie's Stylist Dishes on Her Custom-Made Versace Dress

A while back, I interviewed Angelina Jolie's stylist Jennifer Rade. I recently ran into her again at a Marciano event, and she had lots more to say about "Angie." Jen had just flown in from NYC, where she worked with Angelina on her Changeling red carpet look. She and the actress dreamed up the custom-made Versace LBD together. So why did Angelina play it safe? Jen explained that while most people only have a strong eye, a strong jawline, or a strong lip, Angelina has them all.

Therefore, she wears minimal, classic clothing that lets her features shine. Makes sense. Jen has suggested frillier frocks to her client, but to no avail. She even pulled a colorful cocktail dress from the closest rack and we agreed it would be too busy for Angelina. Now if only the actress had been there to put in her two cents!

Milan Fashion Week, Spring 2009: Versace

While some criticized Frida Giannini's Gucci collection for being overly commercial, and lacking innovation, Versace managed to deliver both wearable and wowable Spring designs. Short, belted dresses are simply adorable, while powerful folds and curvature proved to work for the drama-loving vixen as well. Her palate was subdued — white, powder blue, camel, yellow, black and a gorgeous steel purple. There were plenty of goddess gowns in the mix, but Donatella also poked fun with a 3-D heart motif. The real stunner was a hand drawn and painted colorful collage print by Julie Verhoeven; Donatella likes to dip into the art world for inspiration, too. The youthful and the eternally elegant will appreciate Versace's Spring offerings.

Behind the Seams: Nordstrom Fall 2008 Designer Preview

Seeing runway photos is not nearly as enticing as seeing the clothes live, and Nordstrom's Designer Preview 2008 reiterated that fact. For example, Bill Blass's gray/black tulle-bodice strapless dress — you know, the one Anne Hathaway wore at the Get Smart premiere — literally came to life before my eyes on the catwalk. While I admired it on Anne, I fell madly in love with it that night because I saw the way the bottom half of the dress danced as the model pranced down the runway. Donna Karan, Stella McCartney, Derek Lam, Missoni, Valentino, Michael Kors, Peter Som, Burberry Prorsum, Vera Wang, and Versace also each showed about a dozen Fall looks.

The night was centered around the runway, but the pre- and postparty was also a blast. Clothes hanging on tall racks gave guests, including myself, the chance to get up close and personal with their catwalk faves, while champagne and hors d'oeuvres kept us satiated. Oh, and I got to meet the ultimate San Francisco socialite, Joy Bianchi!

Here, let's focus on what's most important: the Versace gowns Donatella handpicked for the runway show. They were all beauties and I have to say, Anya and Whitney wore them better than well. Actress Kim Raver wore the same dress to CW's upfront presentation in NYC and kept her accessories to a bare minimum. This is a toughie because they present two extremes — matchy matchy and minimal. The Pre-Fall collections have been quietly underway, but are definitely worth mentioning. They have been gaining more popularity as a preview of what's to come for Fall. Since Fall '08 is right around the bend, here are some observations . . . Fashion continues to be all about the lady, and no tramp. Grey seems to be the new favorite canvas color, as well as matte black; prints are mixed, poppy, artsy and colorful. Neutrals are gorgeous too. Sleeves are cropped and experimentation with volume brings it to an even more wearable place. Coats, fur, belts and skirt suits are a plenty. Fab favorites: Michael Kors and his Hitchcock babes, Missoni, Louis Vuitton's mismatching, Proenza's body conscious creations and Versace's sharp lines.

Donatella has struck again! But this time, with a softer force. While the runway oozed with the usual Versace sex appeal, things were a bit more buttoned up, a bit softer, a bit safe.

With a slight safari vibe, daytime separates were very wearable with pocketed shorts, trousers and outerwear. Fabrics of choice were silk and slick leather — again, sexy. While bold and sometimes baby solids ruled, an aqua-infused floral print broke up the monochrome. Nevertheless, the Versace signatures — asymmetrical shapes, draping and cut outs — sexed up sweet gowns.

You know cropped trousers are a Spring favorite when even Versace is doing them. But here, Donatella manages to make even those appear, you guessed it, sexy.

On Our Radar: All Dressed Up by Francesca V

Donatella Versace's niece, 25-year-old Francesca Versace, is presenting her first collection during Paris Fashion Week as "Francesca V."

Her initial offering is a capsule collection for the Singapore-based label All Dressed Up. Francesca is said to be cultivating a sleek signature style, so expect pleated silk necklines, hems inspired by the folds of a turban, accents of gold lurex, all hinting at a discreet, modern glamour.

Anyone with the Versace last name is guaranteed to generate a lot of buzz, and Francesca trained at the well-respected design school Central Saint Martins (John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, and Stella McCartney are all graduates), so keep your eye on this one!

Fab's Fall Most Wanted

Hello Fall! Though I try to hold on to Summer as long as possible, it is officially Fall fashion time and I have compiled my Fall Most Wanted. After flipping through all the glossies, studying Fab ads and clicking through my favorite fashion sites, I now know what I need to build a fresh wardrobe. Some of these items are fantastical, ie. way out of my budget, and some of them are actually obtainable. All of them are this month's desideratum, for me, and hopefully you too!

I have a thing for coats, though I hate snowy weather, but there's no doubt a sharp coat in a sharp color makes a woman; this flaming Versace is my pick of the litter. I think fashion is welcoming separates again and therefore I'd like to slither into this grey D&G high waisted tailored skirt, which would look so polished with these Theory Barbara High Heel Booties. Yay for booties! Marc Jacobs Small Anna Leather Bag flirts with the art deco lover in me while this In God We Trust Lumberjack Tunic has been tempting me for months - I'm mad for plaid! I think I have officially decided to give blazers a try, and this Elizabeth & James Shrunken Blazer fits the bill. And while I'm supporting the Olsens, per Elizabeth and James, doesn't this Nanette Lepore Boyfriend Sequin Cardigan whisper Ashley Olsen? With a few more sophisticated and bold items to covet, I think I'd be quite the lady come Fall. Fab be a lady tonight...

Whether you love her, hate her, love to hate her, or are her, every school has a goodie two shoes, or in this case goodie two Louis Vuitton booties. She may be a brownosing do-gooder but at least she's got style to back it up - she obviously took great notes on the ladylike Louis Vuitton collection. From the Vermeer-inspired berets to the sheen in the circle and pencil skirts to the rich color palette, it's hard to hate this girl. Consider her a frenemie? Truce.
