Who Wore It Better? Jenni Kayne Silk Tie Gown

A case of starlet versus stylist. Rachel Zoe donned this Jenni Kayne dress back in October for the designer's LA store opening, while Kristen chose it for the premiere of Forgetting Sarah Marshall; she wore it a good while later, I might say. It seems the prints are inversed, with Rachel's showing more white and Kristen's more of that stunning electric blue. Both chose chunky gold accessories, though Rachel let her hair down in long loose waves and Kristen went for an updo. I think they both bring something different to the dress in a good way. At long last — after all of the notice-me advertising — Forgetting Sarah Marshall is finally here. Kristen Bell went all out in an appropriately tropical look for the Hawaii—set movie, choosing a Jenni Kayne printed maxi dress in an extra fresh cobalt blue and white palette. What really makes this special is the abundance of chunky gold accessories. They could have thrown the look into overkill territory, but with her beachy updo and casually glam dress, the overall effect strikes just the right balance.

Maybe maxi dresses really will catch on big time. They do capture that bohemian Summer vibe oh so well. Miss Molly Sims debuted the bold dress at Diane von Furstenberg's dinner I attended back in February, and Garcelle Beauvais Nilon selected it for a Saks Fifth Avenue event yesterday. They both wisely chose bare necklines and upswept 'dos, paving the way for the dress to make the main statement. It fits both of them like a dream, but I'm liking the shoulder cutouts on Molly's a tad bit more for that extra flash of skin. Who do you think wore it better?Source

Paris Hilton has been quite a loyal fan to Diane von Furstenberg lately. First she wore the designer's yellow Naro dress and now she's traveling the world in Diane's designs. I am in love with her latest crop of ethnic-inspired frocks, especially this Diane von Furstenberg Ora Patchwork Dress ($585). Though I'm hesitant to deem Paris a style icon, I have to admit this dress works particularly well with her slim figure and height. Do you agree? Source

Maxi dresses are the ultimate way to exude a stylish laid-back look. Just look at Stella McCartney's Spring '08 collection, which was filled with feminine floral maxis. Also take cue from Nicole Richie who recently frolicked LA in a paisley maxi dress. There's something to be said about a dress that can make you look put together and feel comfy at the same time. Do what you will with the neckline but make sure your maxi is floor length. After all, anything shorter wouldn't be a mile-long maxi.

The first batch of Lauren Conrad's Spring '08 collection was rather simple, but the reality star has added new and more interesting pieces. This collection, named Bella, includes a jersey maxi dress (left), a fun full skirt, and a handful of Dolly-print frocks. I admit that LC's designs aren't anything groundbreaking, but they're good for gals who like loose-fitting, comfy fashions.

Oh and I guess this is an appropriate time to tell you that I'll be attending The Lauren Conrad Collection Fall '08 runway show at LA Fashion Week next week! I'm really excited to see what LC will bring us for autumn. Stay tuned . . .

One gal who was under the red carpet radar at the SAG awards was Entourage darling Emmanuelle Chriqui. I just love her! She's really proving to be a budding Fabionista. And this red vintage Halston just upped her ante. Last year was all about the mini and legs, I have a feeling floor grazing dresses will soon be floating about. If we can learn anything from Halston, it's that a maxi can be comfortable and glamorous at the same time.

New York Fashion Week, Spring 2008: Diane von Furstenberg

Diane von Furstenberg has a new direction for Spring: step away from her iconic wrap dresses and embrace flowing, colorful ones. Though a few safari-style wrap dresses crept onto the catwalk (it wouldn't be DVF without it), most pieces were loose maxi frocks and tee shirt dresses in bright and bold colors. There were some vintage-inspired skirt suits and voluminous tunics in amazing tropical prints. Fun!

A good mix of prints and solids came up, the former being geometric but not square. A couple of ombre dresses were shown in colors that resembled rainbow sherbet ice cream...quite delectable! Surprisingly, though flowy dresses dominated, the overall look was not super feminine. Cuban-style fedoras and funky prints gave the collection an air of masculinity that we've all been craving lately.

Eva Longoria grabbed some coffee in LA wearing a T-Bags maxi dress. Though I am not a huge fan of the distracting geometric print, I do like the color scheme. She shows us how petite girls can fake looking tall - just throw on some chunky wedges for maximum height! The Fendi sunglasses and Prada handbag add some extra cha-ching to the outfit and take it from casual to high-end.

Marc Jacobs is known for keeping his prints interesting and this Marc by Marc Jacobs Sara Stripe Patchwork Dress posted by SaraSmile in the Love It or Hate It? group is interesting alright! It took me a while to decide whether or not I like this maxi dress, but I think I'm veering towards "Love It!" I'm not normally a fan of patchwork but the stripes and the twisted knot at the bust are pretty unique. It would be perfect to wear to an outdoor bridal shower. What do you think? I am not a huge fan of patchwork on clothing. It just reminds me too much of wearing a quilt - no offense to quilts! Dress You Up! Maxi Dresses

Ok so this first model in a serious maxi dress looks like a tree, but that is the effect the longest dress of all can help one achieve. I was actually just on a hunt for a maxi dress and ended up scoring an awesome black silk Corey Lynn Calter one. I wore it to Fashion Week Live last month. I gotta tell ya, I stood out (in a good way) amongst all the legs and got several compliments. My analysis: maxi dresses are the next 'It' dress. After all, the only way to go after the mini dress is down, way down. I wore mine with some exotic flats because I am tall; if you're on the shorter side, these look retro redone with a solid pair of wood-heeled wedges.
