Congratulations . . . Leanne Marshall! The Project Runway Season Five Winner

Some of you restrained yourselves when I shared the final Project Runway collections in September. Then, it was still six designers in the running, so I witnessed final collections by Joe, Jerell, Suede, Kenley, Korto, and Leanne. I still don't understand why this isn't planned better. I firmly believe only the final three should show at the tents. Plus, it's a waste of money. Anyway, another Project Runway has come and gone and now you can view them all! And, you can buy them all! While we await the decision on the future of next season, I want to share what I then observed about the winner's collection. I'm not one to toot my own horn, but I had a feeling Leanne would win. Last night, Kenley's collection wowed me over once again and for a second I thought she might win. Alas, a bad attitude and unoriginality spoiled Kenley's chance.

Here's what I thought about Leanne's collection right after I saw it — nothing has changed. It was fresh, innovative, and gorgeous.

Funny how the six collections gradually got better. I think Leanne is going to win. Her collection was as stellar as any of the professional collections from the week. It was conceptual, beautiful, and theatrical. Leanne claimed she "lost a million hours of sleep" over it, and it showed. Sculptural skirts, dresses, and gowns floated down the runway to the beat of a neutral, cool palette. The craftsmanship was expert and you could just feel the adoration in the air. I would wear the ivory off-shoulder top and turquoise petal skirt and the ivory and beige corset mini dress in a heartbeat. And her modern wedding dress blew Suede's off the (project) runway.

Do You Agree With the Three Project Runway Finalists?

Spoiler alert! The last episodes of Project Runway gave a glimpse into the real lives of the finalists. Tim pays visits to their hometowns, where they've been working on their final collections for a month. Learning the roots of the designers is cool; seeing their work spaces, their surroundings, their family, their friends. And Tim really shines as their mentor. Aw. The challenge was to create a wedding dress — oh, and a last-minute bridesmaid dress — and the results were eye opening. It really showed who had a vision. I was a bit disappointed in Korto's — does any woman want to wear beige on her wedding day? — and was blown away by Leanne's. Kenley got the quick insult of her dress resembling Alexander McQueen's Fall collection (it's so true). And Jerell's adorned gown missed the mark. It's crunch time people. The Best of Project Runway Season Five

Let's reminisce. Project Runway season five is coming to a close, with the final two episodes nearing. It hasn't been the most funny or dramatic season, but it has produced the biggest pool of talent. It's always exciting to make it to the final four and have your personal favorite. I think I'll wait to share mine, but here's a collection of some of the best of the season. The Heat Is On Project Runway

Is it me or was last night's episode of Project Runway intense? Emotions are running high, as they normally do this close to the finale show. I liked the challenge — I love the New York Botanical Gardens (if you haven't been, go) — and the idea of creating evening gowns out of flora. Sounds easy right? You would think. But all the designers struggled with this one and didn't produce fabulous flowerful designs. I think guest judge Georgina Chapman, of Marchesa, was disappointed. Alas, next stop: Bryant Park!

Fab Flash: The Battle Over Project Runway Continues

The drama continues: Bravo and Lifetime are still fighting over Project Runway. The Weinstein Co. has filed an appeal after a judge ruling in NBC's favor blocking the show's move from Bravo to Lifetime.

“Obviously we will be appealing and remain committed to our partners,” said the company.

As the companies battle it out, everything will remain the same and season six filming continues — with its home to be determined.

NBC Universal, who was ordered to pay a $20 million bond, and The Weinstein Co. are due back in court Oct. 15 to (finally) settle the matter. With everything up in the air, we can't but wonder if Nina Garcia and Marie Claire will still be part of the show. Hopefully, everything will be resolved before the sixth season airs.

Last night's episode of Project Runway left me loving someone a little more (Leanne) and despising someone a little more (Kenley). When the designers found out they were outfitting each other there were mixed emotions, but when they had to do it according to a musical genre (random) they were intrigued — for the most part. Some took it and ran with it, and even got into character on the runway. And one complained and even insulted mentor Tim Gunn. Annoyances aside, I'm happy about the winner, and the loser. In fact, I think he knew better than me what I wanted the book’s aesthetic to be. He captured the essence of what I had in mind just perfectly.

Who do you think is the most stylish celebrity?

I can’t pick just one. I am always in awe of women like Elle MacPherson, Kate Moss, and Dita von Teese. They all have a distinctive personal style and they stick to it, irrespective of trends.

Project Runway Gets Girls (Women!) Ready For the Real World

Last night's episode of Project Runway lacked pizazz. I think we're at that dwindling point where we just want the remaining true talents to shine. It's time to weed out the wannabees. Am I being too harsh? This is fashion people! The remaining six had to create outfits for women who had recently graduated from college, preparing them for the real world and with mom's approval. Most mother-daughter duos and designers got along, and the designs proved to be pretty run-of-the-mill — nothing fabulously atypical. Maybe they were saving their energy for the finale runway show. The Project Runway Season Five Finale Runway Show!

The grand finale of my Fashion Week was the Project Runway finale show. And what a show it was. Before the season five contestants showed their collections, it was a reunion among familiar faces. It's always a joy seeing Runway alumni gather and mingle. The recently booted Blayne and Terri were there — all smiles — and favorites like Jay, Rami, Jillian (wearing a familiar knit sweater from her collection), Chris March, and Jack Mackenroth (who I chatted with at the Jill Stuart show, he is so sweet) all made cameos. Enter Christian Siriano, who had his own Spring show the night before. Then, Michelle Tractenberg, Rachel Zoe, and Harvey Weinstein were chatting about. Quite the spectacle!Anticipation grew once Heidi, Nina, and Michael Kors all came out to welcoming applause. Side note: Are Heidi and Nina both wearing Roland Mouret dresses? They looked great, but I wonder if that was planned. At 9:30 a.m. the lights dimmed and Heidi appeared, microphone in hand. She said some heartfelt words to the people of Bravo and the Magic Elves (the show's producers) — saying goodbye and thanking them for five great seasons. To bring you up to speed, Runway is moving to Lifetime for their sixth season (and that will be interesting in itself).

The guest judge seat remained empty. All week long there had been rumblings about Jennifer Lopez being the guest judge, but it was anticlimactic when Heidi announced that Lopez was unable to due to "a foot injury." Boo. And so, Tim Gunn stepped in at the last minute to serve as guest judge. Don't get me wrong — I adore Gunn — but it was very exciting when Victoria Beckham graced us with her presence last time. Once all was said and done, the first collection, by Jerell, was unveiled . . .

Which Couture Project Runway Look Was Most Fab?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, especially when it comes to couture. In last night's episode of Project Runway, the designers were asked to create a couture garment that reflected an astrological sign. While others were scolded for their tacky pieces, Leanne, Jerell, and Joe scored high on the judges card for their creative designs. Leanne's scorpion-inspired dress was dark and lovely; Jerell took a huge risk using interesting fabrics; and Joe's ram-inspired dress was well interpreted. Which one was your favorite?Source

Project Runway Goes Drag

I'll take designing for drag queens over WWE divas any day. The designers got their chance at over-the-top and I'm satisfied that most of them lived up to the challenge. It's always a joy to be in the presence of season four alum Chris March and the queens were delightful — such personalities. There is definitely a lot of creativity in this group and this challenge set it free. However, once again I disagree with the winner. I'll spare you any spoilers because the eye candy is just too good . . . viva la drag!

Do You Agree With the Project Runway Judges' Decision Last Night?

For the first time in this season of Project Runway, I completely disagree with the judges' decision. Sorry, Nina! The challenge was to create a day-to-night look for Brooke Shields's character on Lipstick Jungle — really cool. Sophisticated, bohemian, and sharp was what I envisioned. Seeing the team dynamics is always entertaining, but the results were polarizing. After the models walked, I knew who the bottom and top looks were. Spoiler on its way . . . I did not expect Kelli to get sent home for an overly-sexy look while Blayne stayed for his tousled styling and gray Bermuda shorts; after Heidi said it looked like someone who had gotten dressed in the dark without a mirror, I thought the decision was made. So yeah, I totally thought Blayne should have gotten the ax. Maybe I'm alone here, you tell me?

The Elle fashion director turned Marie Claire fashion director and Project Runway judge is also a Fab favorite — remember she answered all your burning fashion questions a while back? With her surely busy schedule, and following her first book, Nina has released The One Hundred: A Guide to the Pieces Every Stylish Woman Must Own ($15), available for preorder. Like her first book, Ruben Toledo illustrations accompany witty and exact writing. Unlike her first book, it's silver, denser, and yours truly is featured on page 29! How exciting is that? (Thanks, Nina)I've given it a good flip through and I already own many of her 100 suggested items to style salvation. Phew — knowing Nina she would have convinced me to get all 100. But what's cool is, even though I own a monokini, I did not know the Vatican denounced it in 1964. And these are the sort of fashion nuggets Nina shares. Project Runway, Episode 3, "Bright Lights, Big City"

Last night's episode of Project Runway showcased a wide and interesting array of creations from the budding designers. Like season two, the contestants were asked to design an outfit for a night out on the town inspired by the (wet) cityscape of NYC. While a couple designs blew me away — namely Leanne's Doo.Ri-esque dress — I wasn't impressed with the overall amount of creativity. Take a look at their designs and let me know what you think. Was It a Good Idea For the Models to Buy Fabrics on Behalf of the Designers?

For the first time in Project Runway history, the designers were not allowed to purchase their own fabrics. Gasp! Instead, the models they picked at the start of the episode did the shopping for them. And they weren't allowed to buy just any fabric; it had to be environmentally friendly. While some designers were impressed by their models' selections, others were stumped and unable to use most of what was in front of them. Of course, in the end, all the models had something to wear, and guest judge Natalie Portman was quite complimentary to some designers. But what do you think? Project Runway, Episode 1 "Let's Start From the Beginning"

Project Runway fanatics know that last night's challenge — creating clothes out of items from Gristedes Supermarket — was nothing new. Hence the title of the episode, "Let's Start From the Beginning." And start from the beginning they did because they brought on Season 1 contestant, and winner of the original Gristedes challenge, Austin Scarlett, as a guest judge. Not surprisingly, the 16 designers freaked out upon hearing their challenge. I bet you half of them didn't even pay attention to Austin's instructions as they were busy visualizing which aisle they were going to run to. While some of them, including some of my favorites, were a little bit of a let down, others stepped up to the plate and impressed us.

"Do I think it's pretty? No." The simple, but deep cutting words of one of our favorite Project Runway judges, Michael Kors — gotta love it. You've met the new batch of aspiring designers and now it's showtime. Project Runway Season Five premieres tonight! Everyone seems pretty wide eyed and excited, but we all know that will soon change. With short and sometimes not so sweet cameos from Tim Gunn, Heidi, Nina and Michael, my favorite part of this video is the faces. Faces of fear, relief, worry and shock, you know what I'm talking about. And I must say: Why is Kelly hating on Nina? She's not so bad, Michael can be just as scary. Welcome the Cast of Project Runway, Season 5

We're taught not to judge a book by its cover, but when you're an unknown fashion designer, all you have is your cover and a mini bio. As we prepare to welcome the new hopefuls of Project Runway into our homes this Wednesday, the three I'm drawn to right off the bat are Emily (left), who worked with Jeremy Scott; Wesley (center), the sharpest dresser from the guys; and Leanne (right), who graduated from FIDM in San Francisco.

If you wish, you can read more in depth about all the contestants. We have yet to see who does the most innovative work, but it's safe to assume that those who look fashion-forward will most probably prove that in their work. I hope, like last season, my predictions are somewhat right. And who knows, since many of the males are not so dashing, maybe we'll have a female winner!

This Just In! Nina Garcia To Join Marie Claire This Fall

One more update on the Nina Garcia situation and I'll stop. I promise. The final word is that Nina will be joining Marie Claire as fashion director in September. Yes, ladies and gents, she has accepted the offer and will replace Tracy Taylor, who has already left the magazine. Congrats (again), Nina!

Fab Flash: Nina Garcia Still Has Decisions to Make

The future is still unsteady for Nina Garcia.

Garcia was set to continue season 5 of Project Runway while finishing her contributing editor position with Elle. She was planning on continuing alliances with the show through Marie Claire after her departure from her former employer. The reports have now been declared inaccurate by a spokesman from The Weinstein Co., stating that Garcia and Michael Kors are still in the midst of contract negotiations with the show for season 5 and 6. Garcia is also negotiating the terms on her relationship, or lack thereof, with Elle's owner, Filipacchi Media.

Whew! Are we all over all this Garcia back and forth?

Fab Flash: Nina Garcia Lands Job at Marie Claire

After much speculation, we finally know where Nina Garcia is going. The former Elle fashion director has been offered a position at Marie Claire. She will reportedly replace Tracy Taylor, the current fashion director at the magazine. The Project Runway star has not commented yet, but reliable sources have confirmed the news. Congrats Nina. We can't wait to see more fabulous work from you!

Fab Flash: Elle Magazine Editors to Guest Star on Ugly Betty

Just as former Elle fashion director Nina Garcia prepares for a guest appearance this Thursday on Ugly Betty, the announcement comes that more Elle editors are joining in on the ugly fun.

Elle Editor in Chief Robbie Myers and creative director Joe Zee will appear on the season finale of the show, which features a charity softball game between Elle and the fictitious Mode magazine. Myers and Zee will both be up to bat on the episode, wearing the uniform at left, and Naomi Campbell is set to play Elle's designated hitter. Sounds like the season is going to wrap with a home run!

Update! Nina Garcia's Departure from Elle

I told you I would keep you updated on the Nina Garcia/Elle drama so here it goes.

The latest word is that the magazine has offered Nina a temporary — around six months — contributing editor's role, long enough for her to appear on Season Five of Project Runway. She has yet to accept the offer or comment on the recent ongoings. The show's producer, The Weinstein Co., is currently in talks to bring Nina, Michael Kors, Elle, and other partners back for a sixth season. It remains to be seen if the show would rehire Nina if the magazine is still involved and she is no longer employed there. Interesting stuff, but what I really want to know is where Nina will be headed next?!

This Just In! Nina Garcia Breaks Up With Elle Magazine?

What? Can this be true? It is being said that Nina Garcia, fashion director of Elle, may have parted ways with the magazine. Rumors began brewing when Joe Zee was hired as creative director at the beginning of 2007, but speculations heated up even more when Nina was missing from an Elle-hosted event celebrating Simon Doonan's new book, Eccentric Glamor: Creating an Insanely More Fashionable You on Tuesday. Nina has yet to comment on the story but what a bummer if it's true. I'll keep you posted . . .

Fab Flash: Nina Garcia to Guest Star on Ugly Betty

When Ugly Betty returns with new episodes on April 24, it may seem like Project Runway is taking the spotlight.

PR judge Nina Garcia and, as earlier reported, PR season four winner Christian Siriano are both making cameos on the campy fashion show. No word yet on what roles they play, but I'm sure curious. They follow behind Project Runway ringleader Tim Gunn, who appeared on the show as a fashion reporter last February. Fun!

New York Fashion Week, Fall 2008: The Project Runway Finale Show (!)

Fashion week is coming to close and I just experienced my grand finale. How exciting is it to attend the Project Runway finale show?! Very.

I knew it would be a mob scene getting in, and luckily I was on the list (you never know sometimes). I wasn't too far in the nosebleeds — and I was directly facing the panel of judges and celebs. Tons of Project Runway alums were mingling in the crowd, including recent cast off Ricky. But honestly, my eyes were on guest judge Victoria Beckham. When she came out, in her orange draped dress and matching orange shoes, the crowd took notice. After photo ops she sat with Nina Garcia and Michael Kors. She was very poised and calm. Funnily, she took diligent notes during every collection — she was taking her guest judge job very seriously.

Lights down, lights up. Our girl Heidi appears announcing, "Hello everyone!" She introduces the judges, and guest judge, and the crowd swoons. Let the show begin...

She's the fashion director at ELLE, she's a judge on Project Runway, she written a style guide, heck she's even answered our Fab questions. Last night she attended the Blackberry Pearl Smartphone launch.
The phone is a pink version of the Blackberry Pearl, and it's one that Nina Garcia is very passionate about. She says she never goes without her Blackberry, especially during photoshoots and the ever-so-stressful fashion week. Like Nina, there are definitely two things I bring to fashion week with me: my fabulous wardrobe and my Blackberry.

How can I look trendy, but still appropriate for my size?

The best way to look trendy but still appropriate is to play up accessories while keeping your wardrobe classic and what looks good on you. Incorporate a colorful statement necklace, like from Tory Burch or J.Crew, or a cocktail ring or decorative cuff to play with trends. Chandelier earrings and a vibrant scarf are also great accents on any shape or size.

Are there any ways to predict a trends longevity?

Trends are often fleeting no matter how long they remain in fashion. But when there is a design or silhouette that favors a broader scope of women that will help ensure a longer presence in fashion.

What's "horrible and tacky and gross"? Last night's Project Runway challenge, according to Christian. The designers were asked to make prom dresses according to the specifications of some very opinionated high-school girls. I can't blame the girls: Who doesn't want to look good at prom?! Kevin was stuck in memories of his own Jersey prom, Rami twisted up a matronly frock, Ricky washed out his client, and Christian earned a berating from Nina Garcia herself. After all the mess that went down, could you confidently say you would put your prom dress's destiny in a PR designer's hands? Can you name some great lesser known brands which might be more affordable but still stylish?

Some favorite lesser known brands that I love are Madewell and Simply Vera by Vera Wang for Kohls. Madewell is a very well priced and terrific look that is well priced and with great pieces that are excellent additions to update your wardrobe. It is similar to J.Crew but younger in spirit and significantly priced less. Simply Vera is unbelievably chic at an almost shamefully low price. The collection is full, including shoes and handbags, classic knits, romantic dresses with charming embroideries. It is really well made and very fashionable without breaking the bank.

We all love a little luxury in our wardrobe but don't always have the means to indulge, that is why I love Uniqlo for their cashmere sweaters. They come in every color of the rainbow and style, all at an affordable price. A little more expensive but worth the splurge is Rugby by Ralph Lauren. Classic American sportswear with a twist, Rugby has an incredible selection of classic peacoats, tweed jackets and varsity sweaters. Not lesser known but a sure thing for both affordability and style are Zara and H&M.

Would You Have Chosen To Do an Edible Garment on Project Runway?

Last night's Project Runway brought the much-dreaded unusual-material challenge. The designers found themselves at the Hershey's store in Times Square scooping up Reese's candies, Hershey Kiss pillows, and whatever else they could get their hands on in the five-minute grab session. All of the designers, save one, ended up using candy wrappers, paper, or pillow fabric to fashion their garments: Chris warned about the dangers of working with food. Jillian was the lone ranger, daring to use Twizzler's to embellish her design and catch guest judge Zac Posen's eye. Her decision gave her a lot of trouble, but worked out in the end — would you have risked it like she did, for extra brownie points?And, while we're on the subject, could you have really seen Chris's outfit "shot for the pages of Elle," as Nina said? Nina Garcia Answers Our Fab Questions, Part III

Nina is the gift that keeps on giving! The ELLE fashion director and Project Runway judge has been answering all of our burning questions and here are some more! I am finding these answers helpful in many aspects of fashion so I hope you are too.

Why do you think the fashion world is so whitewashed? What will it take for runways and editorials to become more diverse? Do you think it will ever happen?

I do hope that fashion more willingly will embrace diversity. Unfortunately, fashion is going through a phase where there is a particular type and model look that is being cast. Mr. Yves Saint Laurent had a wonderful eye for African American models and they would dominate his runway shows. At ELLE, we are consciencious of our readers and celebrate diversity in our pages-through ethnicity, age, and body type. We were the first magazine to have an African American on the cover — Alek Wek — and just recently shot Miss Universe, Rio Mory, who is from Japan. Fashion is cyclical and I am sure that like any phase, we will evolve from this too.

Project Runway Fashion Quiz: Episode 5 "What's the Skinny"

Was last night's episode of Project Runway not the most emotional yet? The most shocking bit, the whole Jack/Chris switcheroo, had me in tears one minute and laughing the next. And the challenge itself tugged on the heartstrings: recrafting the favorite outfits of women who had recently lost a considerable amount of weight. Overall, it was a great episode. However, my vote went to Kevin's outfit — not Christian's — even with the leggings. I just thought his model looked the most Fab in that little strapless top. Aside from all the emotions, were you paying attention to the details? Take our quiz and see!

Ta da! Here's more fashion advice from Fab-favorite Nina Garcia. Seeing as how she's the ELLE fashion director and Project Runway judge, we should be all ears to what she has to say. She is doing a blog tour and answering all of our fashion and Project Runway questions. As promised, Nina delivered and here's the second set of Q&As. Enjoy!

I would love to get your thoughts on accessory don'ts. Are there things, trends, etc. that we should not do when accessorizing?

I think It bags are an accessories don't. Season after season women become so enchanted with these of-the-moment fads and spend a great deal of money on a look that has the shelf life of 3–5 months. Instead, I think investing in a classic bag that, historically, has stood the test of time: Louis Vuitton Speedy, Hermes Birkin, Chanel 2.5. Another accessory don't is when women get too excited with their accessories and wear them all at once! Wearing the statement ring, statement necklace, and statement earrings all at once will not make a statement, but look too much. Keep it to two pieces, like a chandelier earring and cuff or a more dramatic necklace and cocktail ring to personalize your look.

Nina Garcia Answers Our Fab Questions, Part I

The moment we've all been waiting for! Last week I announced that Nina Garcia, ELLE fashion director and Project Runway judge, is doing a blog tour and going to answer all of our fashion and Project Runway questions. As promised, Nina delivered and here's the first set of Q&As for all of us to soak up. Nina answered most of your questions so I'm going to reveal them over the next few weeks. Enjoy!

What are the rules for mixing prints? And colors? Can you mix different shades of white in an outfit — such as true-white pants with an ivory coat? Or do they all have to be the same shade of white? As I keep seeing folks mixing bright brown colors with black I have to ask, it is now acceptable to mix these colors?

The rules are there are no rules! Mixing prints can be an intimidating and potentially have disastrous results if not done in a subtle way. I recommend looking at the Dries Van Noten Spring '08 show where he paired various prints together with beautiful results. Mixing solid colors is less daunting and I think that mixing various shades of white is a very modern and chic silhouette. Brown and navy are classic colors that work well with black. Although I still find that women are hesitant to put the dark colors together, I think by combining navy or brown with black softens the look and makes it more modern.

Was It Fair That Jack Used His Shorts as a Pattern on Project Runway Last Night?

It's only episode three, but things on Project Runway are starting to heat up both on and off the runway. This week's challenge? Menswear for Today Show correspondent and former NY Giants running back Tiki Barber. Needless to say, the designers freaked! But menswear means male models — and I'm never one to argue with that. Elisa continued in the eccentric vein, refusing to touch her model even though he told her he wants to do ethno botany, a subject you'd think she'd be into. Christian's self-assurance continues to amuse, and Heidi Klum speaks of David Beckham with more than a little disdain. So...Did You Watch the First Episode of Project Runway Season 4?

You know I did! Since I've been leading up to the premiere of the fourth season with an ode to Tim Gunn and Nina Garcia and their 10 Fashion Essentials, it's now time to sit back and watch the masters at work. Be sure to check out my 10 Fashion Essentials too! What did you think of Project Runway's season 4 premiere episode?! In case you didn't watch yet, I'm not going to spoil anything — we will definitely be bringing you fun spoilers, polls and quizzes this season. My two cents, because I can't resist: I think the judges should be looking for someone really commercially viable. We've witnessed some winners, and a whole lot of losers, hopefully in the show's fourth time around we'll witness some real fashion magic.
