Spring Peek! Styling Advice from Patrick Robinson

I already gave you a Spring peek; now get some vernal styling advice from Gap's head designer, Patrick Robinson. The former Paco Rabanne designer dishes about the specific pieces to buy, how to wear them, and offers tips and his design inspirations. He even practices what he preaches with his own Spring-inspired wardrobe! At the end of every segment, there's information on the items worn by the model. I don't know about you, but I'm kinda crushing on this Gap Mac Jacket in Yellow ($70). It looks especially fresh with the popped collar. Armed with advice from Fab and Patrick, you're definitely ready for Spring!

Metallics have been around the block and back. I'm glad to see them taking on new forms and becoming more fluid and romantic. Marni (pictured) presents the perfect juxtaposition of luster and crispness — a thoroughly modern combination. I am a self-proclaimed luster addict. Can you imagine the ways these clothes move? They are probably blinding in the sun. But that's the beauty of the luster — you just can't keep your eyes off it, no matter how painful it is.

What is Fab's Achilles’ heel? Gimme shoes! Designer, contemporary, cheapy, high, flat, boots, ladylike, utilitarian, edgy — I want it all. This Spring is going to be a dangerous one because the shoe offerings are a plenty and a fabulous. I already touched on the unexpected but very cool boots of Spring, and a storm of gladiators is coming to cover many a feet come warmer days. As for the rest? Like this oddball from Marc Jacobs (pictured), they'll knock your socks off.

Many fashion houses dipped into the archives for Spring inspiration. We all have fantasies of being a Pink Lady from Grease, a swinger in the '60s, or a flower child from the '70s. Spring Peek: Headgear

Keeping up with my hat kick, headgear was an interesting trend for Spring 2007. At Derek Lam (shown) graphic patterned scarves were wrapped around the head creating colorful turbans. Other designers experimented with thick, layered headbands and babushka-like concoctions. Marc Jacobs collaborated with Stephen Jones to create metallic caps for his namesake collection and rosette corsages for Louis Vuitton. If you want to top off your look with something unique this Spring, invest in some headgear. Get prepped for Spring with my other Spring Peeks.

Beauty Spring Peek: Bangs

Big bang baby! Bangs are back! Just look at these delicate bangs at the Spring 2007 Marchesa show. This was the first show for these fancy shmancy designers and I must say, their evening dresses were gorgeous...all 26 of them!

The concept for the show was "Paparazzi Ready." The girls looked glam in their super short or super long dresses, soft and sweet looking makeup and their hair swept back in an updated ballet bun with bangs! Spring Peek: The New Suits

Judging by your response from the recent Look of The Day: Androgynous Cool I think lots of you will be excited for this Spring Peek. The face at the Matthew Williamson Spring 2007 Fashion Show was fresh and tan and not too over done. This look was inspired from a fun loving girl on vacation in Ibiza and is meant to let the inner you shine on through.

Spring Peek: Bloomers

Today a Sugar girl received a beautiful bouquet of orange roses with red berries and Stargazer lilies. They inspired me to deliver you this Spring Peek showing you all the big bloomers that graced the runways. Rosettes, big flower prints and fabric corsages popped on garments adding volume and sweetness. Bloomers even showed up as show garnish: Yves Saint Laurent had thousands of violets sewn onto the floor of his runway - tripping up the models, literally. This Spring, say it with flowers. I think Alexander McQueen, shown here, screamed it with flowers!

Beauty Spring Peek: The Chic Sleek Ponytail

The chic, sleek ponytail is back! Thank goodness...for once there is an easy style out there for the days when we need just a little extra sleep! These ponytails are low maintenance. They are a classic and beautiful way to pull off a polished look as well as a great way to secure your hair if you want it off of your face and neck.

Pony's also focus attention to your cheekbones. It's a little trick that expert hairstylists have been using for years to make women look refreshed and awake...sort of like you've just gotten a face lift! Spring Peek: White Lightening

The Spring runways were especially heavenly because of this Spring Peek. White lightening struck many designers this time around and this color manages to look great against tan skin in the summer and pale, flushed skin in the winter. I welcome this look by Thakoon with open (pale) arms. These flowy or crisp white looks, primarily in dresses and separates, can also serve as modern wedding dresses. Nail It! Spring Nail Polish Colors

Say 'sayonara' to dark, vampy nails and 'konnichi wa' to soft, delicate pink nail colors for Spring 2007. Pale nails make hands look feminine and lighter shades are much easier to maintain than darker colors. Pastel pink nails also look great on super short nails. These are the "It" colors for next season. All of the new colors haven't been released yet but here are a few of my favorite oldies but goodies to get you started.

Sarah Smile by Deborah Lippmann, $15, was created with and for Sarah Jessica Parker. It's a super sheer and sexy whisper pink neutral that reminds me of the color of her light pink Oscar de la Renta dress she wears in her Lovely perfume ad.

Ballet Slippers by Essie, $7, is a longtime classic sheer pink. It looks great with all skin tones and is one of about 20 pale pinky-nude colors in the Essie line.

If it isn't obvious based on the couple of Spring Peeks I've done, dresses are the wardrobe staple for Spring 2007. This is exciting news! Not only are dresses feminine but they have a natural ease and don't require as much matching skills as separates. They are also (usually) comfortable and are a look in itself. Lastly, they make you feel like a woman - and nobody's complaining about that! While the minidress was a standout, calf-length and floor-grazing gowns in a plethora of colors will be available for Spring.

Spring Peek: Intergalactic Planetary

The talk of fashion town is the extreme difference between the two over-arching trends for Spring 2007. The first one being Romanza and the second one being Intergalactic Planetary. Femme bots dominated the runways in a major way, with nods to fashion legends Paco Rabanne and Andre Courreges. The use of metals, plastics and black shiny leather created these bad attitude looks.

Whether you are sugar or spice, salt or pepper, nice or naughty, get used to seeing these trends trickle into your Spring wardrobe. I personally love the theatrics of this Spring Peek, but I crave the gorgeousness of Romanza. What are your thoughts?
